The Case for Reparations, by Ilya Shapiro

I really think people have absolutely no idea how difficult legal immigration is to navigate in this country. Just one example of the impossible situations our laws create:

The Trump administration defying a 9-0 Supreme Court ruling is truly a test of the government’s checks and balances.

On Friday, Judge Hollander asked SSA Administrator Dudek to appear at a hearing on April 15. (Left) Tonight, the Trump administration says it will decline to make him available (right) storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

MIT following Harvard's lead here

1/4. On the White House’s theory, if they abduct you, get you on a helicopter, get to international waters, shoot you in the head, and drop your corpse into the ocean, that is legal, because it is the conduct of foreign affairs.

Just got word from my college roommate - who is the state archivist for the state of South Dakota - that due to the DOGE shutdowns of IMLS, they can no longer fund InterLibrary Loan in SD. This means exchange between libraries, ability to get books delivered across the system, is gone as of 4/30.

I will say this - EVERYONE with power seems to be desperately hoping that unpopularity does the work that consequences need to do

AOC: I was watching earlier today on TV, someone was saying, “Why are AOC and Bernie going to Idaho?” I’ll give you one simple answer: It’s because you matter

"You don't deserve due process if you're a criminal" has got to be among the least "American" arguments the government has put forward in a century

The Trump administration wanted to control the most basic aspects of the university, including what is taught and who is hired. The wanted to turn Harvard into a fancy version of Trump University. And when Harvard said no, Trump used publicly funded research as a hostage.

Since the Trump admin continues to claim Mr. Abrego Garcia is a gang member, I thought I'd take the time to put together a timeline, based on all the documents filed in court, which lays out all the "evidence" the government has ever offered. As you'll find out, there's very little "there" there!

When men scream at me on here for having the standard that we shouldn’t elect Dems who are accused of sexual assault because “they’re better than Trump,” it reminds me that men benefit from rape culture because they can always compare themselves to a man who has done something worse

I remember having to defend myself for never backing down on my position that, for whatever qualities he had, chucking Al Franken was the right move. You have to hold the line on this. Men, even smart and talented men, are NOT irreplaceable.

“.. ‘This is their M.O.,’ Mr. Mahdawi’s lawyer, Luna Droubi, said. ‘They just continue to hide the individual to the point where their attorneys can’t quite understand or identify where to file.’” @nytimes.com www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/n...

"Kevin Hayden, I think, needs to ask himself, is it necessary and proper to abduct somebody in the middle of their constitutionally protected jury trial? That’s really what’s at stake.” I am not a lawyer, but it seems like charging this ICE agent is one of our few tools for pushing back right now.

Today, the government detained another student for their speech. Mohsen Mahdawi's attorneys have already filed a petition for his release and a Vermont judge ordered he not be moved out of state. As his fight continues, let us be clear: Dissent is not grounds for deportation.

this is Mohsen Mahdawi, the green card holder who was just arrested by ICE for rendition at his citizenship interview

In defiance of the Supreme Court & without any evidence, the White House claims that Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a “terrorist,” who was “sent to the right place.” This is a blatant LIE. He is innocent. He cannot be allowed to rot in an El Salvadorian jail. He must be brought home.

NEW: DOJ finally files its response. They continue to refuse to provide any information about any steps they are taking to bring him back, suggesting they are not taking any. They again offer nobody with personal knowledge and simply cite Bukele's (utterly false) claim that he can't do anything.

Heroes at Protect Democracy filed suit today against the Trump administration doing a very niche but very important illegal action. I’ll write a thread on this tomorrow, but I recommend you give @protectdemocracy.org a follow for all things appropriations and impoundment.

important context about the concentration camps in el salvador:

*literal nazi shit happening all day every day while the nazis brag about the nazi shit they are doing and gloat about doing even more nazi shit tomorrow* liberals: WHAT ARE WE A BUNCH OF COMMIES

It is legally impossible to deport citizens. This is not deportation. Removing citizens to foreign prisons, knowing to a certainty that they will be subjected to treatment that violates the U.S. constitution, doesn’t deserve any label that connotes legal legitimacy.

This is literally just DEI but for conservatives, and also mandatory federal DEI for conservatives at threat of far greater punishment than anything any DEI advocates ever called for.

It's 5:02 and they missed the deadline. So, to recount: - Friday: Late, refused to provide any information - Saturday: On time, refused to provide required info on steps to bring Mr. Abrego back. - Sunday: On time, refused to provide required info on steps to bring Mr. Abrego back. - Monday: Late.

Wouldn't it be nice if every news outlet that covered the Bukele Oval Office meeting noted: District court wrote: Abrego Garcia "has never been charged with or convicted of any crime."⤵️ Fourth Circuit: The government presented "NO EVIDENCE" of MS-13 affiliation. Abandoned argument before court. ⤵️

Like I said, I was, for a time, this guys staff who oversaw housing. He doesn’t care and he isn’t smart.

An unappreciated part of this story: the person doing the arrest wasn't an ICE agent, it was an ATF agent. According to Reuters, 4 out of every 5 ATF agents has been reassigned to do immigration enforcement. So it's a great time to be a gun runner in the United States.

How long, in minutes, would it have taken the GOP to introduce articles of impeachment against Clinton, Obama, or Biden if they had said they were going to ship American citizens to a prison in El Salvador? 15? Less?

What we saw today was two jumped up thugs and their bootlicking sychophants laughing at the US Constitution, the supreme court, and the idea that anyone can stop them from doing anything they want www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

master class in headline accuracy

"“No government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue,” said Alan Garber, Harvard’s president, in a statement to the university" www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/u...

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

I feel like your gut reaction to "US President opens additional extrajudicial concentration camps" should be "this is bad on its own" without having to add "what if this happens to WHITE, AMERICAN people next?"

Mass, relentless public protest is all there is. Every other mechanism for stopping despotism has failed. There's a reason that so many state constitutions include the phrase "All political power is inherent in the people"
