E-cargo bikes and low speed vehicles are helping Ottawa businesses meet their goals, so why aren't they part of the city's new Green Fleet Strategy? envirocentre.ca/whats-missin...

Hopefully this speeds up approval for the new mixed use towers that are set to replace the car storage

Dreaming one day we can see this quick and easy upgrade to the Laurier Bike Lane

Just signed up to talk about #SingleStair at Vancouver council on wed. Some staff are trying to kill it. Please speak or write: council.vancouver.ca/20250226/psp... @seanjurs.bsky.social @conradspeckert.bsky.social @holz-bau.bsky.social @thetransitguy.com @Lyle.cville.online.ap.brid.gy

Doug Ford needs to cancel Ontario’s contract with Starlink now. Absolutely solidarity with Ukraine but also to avoid it being used as a bargaining chip by Musk and Trump against Canada. Right now, Premier Ford.

there is a fundamental contradiction between "home as affordable shelter" and "homes as appreciating assets." in order for the latter to be true, prices must go continually up, which requires some combo of supply restrictions & subsidies, and also tends to produce this:

HOT RESEARCH NEWS! Motonormativity ("car brain") is a bias that stops people making rational judgements about driving en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motonor... Our new study shows where this bias comes from AND how it makes people think they're odd for supporting changes to the transport system 🧵

“A federal court has dealt a blow to Mayor Mark Sutcliffe's Fairness for Ottawa campaign, dismissing the city's argument that it's getting shortchanged on payments for servicing tax-exempt government buildings.” www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

no king but biking

So we want to buy Canadian but the only apples come in this bag that says 100% recyclable but no number so we don’t know what it is made of, so it will just be landfilled. And apples don’t need a bag or it wouldn’t be full of holes. We have to do better than this.

The Ontario election is a week away — time flies when you don't have time. Here's a thread of what @thenarwhal.ca's Ontario bureau has been working on in the lead-up:

The Ontario provincial government is really gasping for anything to keep the 20th century car-centric status quo going. Trying to punish parents who have found a more efficient, affordable, and healthy way to get around is a LOW blow. www.thestar.com/news/gta/dro...

IMPORTANT: We put FAR too much weight on projections and models in city planning — population projections, economic projections, traffic models etc. I’ve worked with projections my whole career, and I know one thing — EVERY projection is wrong. We just don’t know by how much and in what direction.

If we want more than a bandaid on the housing crisis, the next increment of development should be legalized by right in every neighborhood across North America. ✍️: Andrew Price

Forgotten Friday. Did you know Ottawa used to have streetcars? From 1891 till 1959 - when it was ripped out in favour of car-centric sprawl. Ottawa’s LRT is expanding, so as the core densifies a streetcar system (separated from traffic) could be key for better urban mobility.

Yes in my backyard as in yes to infill; no to sprawl.

this is a good point. reporting content to third parties is a new concept that is unique to Bluesky, so it's helpful to spread the word about how to do this: 1. Subscribe to @labeler.bikesky.social 2. See an Anti-Cyclist post 3. Press the 3-dot menu and select Report 4. Then select Bikesky Labeler

No one got my point here, so let me try to explain it better. Talking about punching Nazis is posturing - it also has consequences for you that you don't count on. Actual work trying to win this involves supremely boring/necessary shit like talking to the people who *support* the Nazis.

Bank St is one of the very few real streets in Ottawa, and we should be improving it as a STREET, not as a corridor for people leaving the core

I love bluesky, but it's short form and it's not easy to go in depth on complicated topics on here. So I have started a blog called "Dwell On This" dwellonthis.substack.com If you like what I post here on bluesky, come over to my blog for more in depth conversations about architecture and advocacy

I can. In fact, the Canadian version is so great, I can't think of an American equivalent. 🧵

But electric cars will save us, right? /s

Short answer: Yes "Using a car for over 50% of out-of-home activities lowers life satisfaction." doi.org/10.1016/j.tb...

Counted over 15 bikers on my short walk to work today. Considering it’s -20 in Ottawa I’d say that’s pretty impressive. Winter cycling is a legitimate commuting method!

‘You realize it snows in Ottawa, right? You can’t bike in here’ Glad to report it went very well. Kids had a good time also

40 years, and nothing has been done about it... what a waste... so many squandered opportunities for better cities

great to see good ideas being put to the test by way of design competitions

It’s time for Canada to import Japanese zoning, Korean and Spanish transit construction practices, Dutch road design, and Swiss building codes.

the city has roughly the same amount of fatalities on car collisions and murders, but those deaths are not treated the same in our discourse. people are quick to shout for more police intervention, but when you say 'safer streets' you are a radical

quality of life

Vance: "he has an IQ of 110 but thinks he has an IQ of 130" Any normal person:

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath grist.org/biking/one-m...

this SHOULD be the way

Worldly Wednesday 🌍 Why do people love Paris? Architecture, public transpo, it’s vibrant & walkable. Why do people love Tokyo? Architecture, public transpo, it’s vibrant & walkable. Why do people love… It does not just have to be abroad, we can make it happen in Ottawa too

I ride a bike for transportation in urban environments and I'm tired of motorists trying to take my life from me simply for existing outside of a multi-ton vehicle.

send my councillor a letter on this. I really wish we had more options for riverfront enjoyment, specially during summer times

This kind of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism is illegal to build in most American cities

Some good news in this Ottawa proposal, but the public spaces are all overscaled. So much dead, empty space. ottawacitizen.com/news/local-n...
