Christian List explains it nicely. There is no contradiction between the idea of free will and the fact that our choices are part of the causal chains of natural laws. What we call conscious choice is indeed our choice, but it doesn't mean it's detached from the microphysical processes of our brain.

Geschafft!

***Coming up next week (June 3-5): the 2025 Munich Lectures in Ethics: Professor David Enoch (Oxford/Hebrew University of Jerusalem) on "Autonomy, Consent, Liberalism". Just released by the Institute of Art and Ideas (@iai.tv): Christian List (of @lmumuenchen.bsky.social) on why "Science as we know it won’t explain consciousness" "None of the physical and behavioural markers of consciousness that scientists study get to the heart of what consciousness is."

If Earth stays at its current levels of warming — below policymakers’ goal of 1.5 degrees Celsius — polar ice sheets may melt, causing seas to rise and displacing millions in coastal communities, a new study finds.

Scientists show that +1.5 °C is far too warm for Earth's ice sheets and will result in several metres of sea-level rise over the coming centuries, extensive loss and damage to coastal populations and will challenge the implementation of adaptation measures www.nature.com/articles/s43...

⚠️New study shows that even warming of 1.5°C is too high to prevent long term global damage from the melt of Earth's polar ice sheets 🌊❄️ @geogdurham.bsky.social @iccinet.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s43...

Here is a short summary of my critical response to physicalism, dualism, and mainstream versions of panpsychism. #consci #consciousness

Dualists, physicalists, panpsychists all "share ... the assumption that there is a unified objective world ... in which all relevant properties can be found" - but consciousness shows this assumption is false, argues @clist.bsky.social - bit.ly/42BlN6k #philsky #philmind
