Two Weeks In The Death Spiral Of Cardiff University, by an anonymous academic. This is truly shocking read. The Cardiff executive board should hang their heads in shame. voice.cymru/two-weeks-in...

New open access paper in Speech Communication on “nasal coarticulation in Lombard speech”: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... I argue that, in Lombard speech, coarticulatory vowel nasality falls amid a compressed range of nasalisation, but coarticulation is maintained @phoneticslab.bsky.social

It was my great privilege to give a talk yesterday at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, hosted by the Language Documentation Centre, Department of General and Indo-European Linguistics. @lancslinguistics.bsky.social @phoneticslab.bsky.social

Scaling laws for nonlinear dynamical models of articulatory control ➡️ My new article out today in JASA Express Letters, in which I present some new advances on nonlinear task dynamic models of articulatory speech movements. 🔗 doi.org/10.1121/10.0... @asa-news.bsky.social

The DESTRUCTION OF THE HUMANITIES at Cardiff University Management seems to think that Humanities scholars don't know how to read statistics Diving into their proposals shows how they are trying to hide the true extent of damage to Humanities disciplines here /1

What a lovely and moving account of how #Irish is not confined to rural & Gaeltacht areas, and how it matters in an urban space like Dublin. #langsky #minoritizedlanguages

We are delighted to welcome Dr Anton Malmi, who has started a 3-year postdoc in @phoneticslab.bsky.social @lancslinguistics.bsky.social funded by the Estonian Research Council! Anton will be investigating the acquisition of palatalisation in Estonian children using ultrasound tongue imaging.

New speakers - people learning and reclaiming a language - are key to any language revitalization movement. 🌱 Understanding what motivates people to reclaim and learn their languages is an important part of revitalization work. A new book explores these issues in Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic):

Alt text? Don’t worry, Santa’s elves have your back! Writing great alt text is simpler than you think. Got questions? Ask our alt text elves!

Congratulations to Pàdraig MacAoidh [Peter Mackay] on his appointment as Scotland's new Makar (National Poet). Pàdraig is the first Scottish Gaelic poet in the role. He recorded his poem Crann-cuinnse [Quince Tree] to promote the announcement. The English translation appears in the thread below.

Happy #LancashireDay! In an eventful hour, I teamed up with a passing electrician to herd and wrestle the sheep back into a field. Then saw a kingfisher fishing in the river as the sun set.

The world hasn’t gone upside down yet, so it should be real — I’m #PhDone having defended my thesis on Monday! The past four years have been so much fun with my great supervisors @clrnance.bsky.social @samkirkham.bsky.social and amazing colleagues all over the world! Thank you everyone!

Congratulations to Lancaster Phonetics Lab student Takayuki Nagamine who passed his PhD viva with no corrections yesterday! Sam Kirkham and I supervised Takayuki's research. Thanks to examiners Alexei Kochetov and Danielle Turton, and Chair @justinjhlo.bsky.social. Photo from the after party 🥳

Some days I complain about my job, but some days I get to meet inspiring teachers doing incredible things for Gaelic with lovely children in a beautiful place. Today was a good day!

Had a fun time wearing giant headphones to record this for BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking with @robdrummond.bsky.social Andrea Smith, Shane O'Mara and John Gallagher. Great to chat about accents and ultrasound www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Had a great time on Tuesday recording an episode of Free Thinking for BBC Radio 3, talking all things voice with @clrnance.bsky.social and others. Podcast available here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p...

A brilliant evening with Phonetics Lab colleagues at Light Up Lancaster, a light festival in our city. Public engagement is wonderful but also so completely exhausting 😅

My first time being covered in the Mail, but it could have been worse. Happy to identify as a 'mouth scanning scientist' 😅

I got project stickers printed and it's possibly the best professional decision I've ever made ever. (Design by Emily Gorman).

Monday morning* praatpicture feature drop 🍾 - Multiple channels (any number in theory) can now be plotted! - There's now support for special font types like bold, small caps etc in TextGrids using Praat's conventions! (1/)

New on here but happy to (re)connect with everyone! Enjoy this amazing and massive tongue our PhD student Emily Gorman is painting as a commission for a light festival in Lancaster.
