A few percent of Germany emissions? Not good to see natural systems flip from CO2 sink to source.

Living on the ocean floor makes a lot more sense than living on Mars: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

So now we have it. Rachel Reeves's claim that a third runway at Heathrow Airport would boost economic growth comes from a report commissioned by .... Heathrow Airport. Instead of acting in the national interest, she's channelling corporate lobbyists. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

LA is in a high fire risk region & fire weather conditions are complex. So we @wwattribution.bsky.social looked at many lines of evidence. All show: our burning of fossil fuels increased the likelihood of such extreme fire weather conditions www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...

Here's my thoughts on the latest round of discussion about the slowing of the Atlantic overturning circulation. It's a bit nerdy - but the short summary is: in my view the balance of evidence strongly suggests that the #AMOC has slowed since the late 19th C. 🌊 www.realclimate.org/index.php/ar...

This snapshot of top climate news on @carbonbrief.org really captures global climate politics in this historical moment: full-on denial in the US, ambivalence and greenwashing in the UK, and a new implementation of 1+N, a "zone specific environmental management system," in China.

Many people got interested in my story of being fired for my refusal to fly back to Europe from fieldwork in Papua New Guinea. After more than 1 year of legal dispute,I agreed on the settlement proposed by the Kiel Regional Labour Court. Here's the press release: docs.google.com/document/d/1... 1/🧵

A year in review, there were a total of 68 books in 2024, 26 Fiction and 42 non-fiction. Very hard to narrow down but...

Its pretty stark just how much warmer 2023 and 2024 were globally than any prior year on record. For more details, see our Berkeley Earth global temperature report here: berkeleyearth.org/gl...

Pandemic was chance to keep some energy cuts, but no, economy rushed back on wave of fossil fuel. Russia's invasion was also opportunity to 'stick it to Putin' by cutting fossil fuel, but no: European imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia at ‘record levels’ www.theguardian.com/environment/...

UK is conspicuously absent from this list, hasn't really turned up to 21st century economy. qz.com/top-10-count...

Here's a great essay on one of my favourite books of the year: dark-mountain.net/the-deluge/ ** Spoilers ** for The Deluge by Steve Markley.

This is a good explainer of the mirror pathogens issue. I didn't really get it when I skimmed the Science article, but I understand the worry much better now. Recommended reading for laypeople!

#Arctic sea ice extent has fallen to a record low for today's date (previously was 2016), which is related to particularly low sea ice in the outer marginal seas (e.g. record low in Hudson Bay). This is also the first new daily records set this year. Data: 'daily' NSIDC: nsidc.org/data/seaice_...

It's that time of the year again - earliest sunset! 16:07 in my part of the world. More info here: www.timeanddate.com/sun/

This is a huge result, questions can be asked about the specifics of the validation, precisely what is meant by 'more accurately', but it's certainly working well and for a far far lower computational resource than traditional NWP.

As a reminder, land areas (where we live) are warming around twice as fast as the oceans. Subsequently, most of us are 'experiencing' temperatures rising faster than the global mean record. Data from NASA GISTEMPv4: data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/ ⚒️🧪
