“We are shocked and saddened by the news of Professor Michael Burawoy’s passing. His untimely death is a great loss to sociology & to movements for justice around the world.” @michaelabenson.bsky.social on a collegiate, courageous giant of the discipline. thesociologicalreview.org/announcement...

This is devastating. Burawoy was one of the most incredible minds in US sociology, an admirable mentor to so many, and an altogether remarkable exceptional educator. www.mercurynews.com/2025/02/04/o...

Join my new Public Economics team at @unileipzig.bsky.social! A 100% PhD/Postdoc position with teaching and a 75% PhD position in a DFG research project on the triangle of growth, housing and voting in Germany with @sebastiankohl.bsky.social & @trgn.bsky.social. Apply until Feb 28

Incredibly proud and excited for our team to have partnered with the COS to incorporate RegCheck into Lifecycle Journal. Check out the link in the quoted post to learn more about (and submit your work to) this super cool initiative!

Horizontal #segregation fuels economic #inequalities. Yet, the perceived fairness of these disparities remains underexplored. @dianagalos.bsky.social, Susanne Strauß, Thomas Hinz, and I investigated how people perceive #fairness in the economic returns of #fields of study. doi.org/10.1111/1468...

🚨Job alert 🚨 I am looking for two PhD students to work on (comparative) economic inequalities, broadly defined 💰📈💸 The positions are fully funded (E13, 100%), 4 years (with possibility of a 1y extension), and in beautiful Heidelberg! 🏰 adb.zuv.uni-heidelberg.de/info/INFO_FD... Deadline is Feb 28!

A few months ago I read @philipncohen.com's Citizen Scholar in proof. It's now available in print. To restore public trust in expertise, professors can’t just profess—they need to engage. Citizen Scholar explores how contemporary academics can do this, and why they might choose to.

Flesch reading-ease is a regression of cloze tests (fill in blanks) for passages from a 1975 US Navy training manual on two predictors: (1) words per sentence (2) syllables per word. Maybe British abstracts are getting harder to read, but this isn't a valid measure of it.

Before you start into the well-deserved holiday break, may I submit a possible entry for your New Year's resolution: job-portal.lmu.de/jobposting/5... Come and work with us in Munich as a postdoctoral researcher. Applications are due January 15th.

Reminder: From 1st Jan. 2025, the deposit of replication packages will be condition for publication in ESR! Find out more at: academic.oup.com/esr/pages/General_Instructions

New publication! When is it fair to tax the rich? I ask what attributes of the rich (hard worker, charitable, from modest background, treats workers well, etc) affect support for taxing the rich. (1/2) doi.org/10.1177/0010...

One underrated benefit of writing blog posts is that almost everything I write about is something that (a) I need to reuse later, and (b) I will forget immediately after I use it. Corollary: huge thank you to past-Danielle for writing this, it saved me last night blog.djnavarro.net/posts/2024-0...

Come bye if you are in London tomorrow! I will present my latest research on the role of parental transfers in creating wealth disparities between women and men 👇

My paper on the effect of social policy reform on educational inequality published in #JOSP now finally has a volume and issue number! It took a while 🤯 I find that #Hartz4 in 🇩🇪 led to a drop in chances to enter upper sec school for children living in affected families doi.org/10.1017/S00472

Since it is inefficient to attempt to educate every reviewer individually, I am yeeting into your feed this clear paper from Gelman, Hill, and Yajima on how Bayesians can do even better than correcting for multiple comparisons. arxiv.org/abs/0907.2478

Fascinating new paper by Bukodi and Goldthorpe, showing among other things recent growing educational inequalities by family background in West-Nordic countries, after marked declines in the first half of the 20th century. #sociology #econsky Link, OA: academic.oup.com/esr/advance-...

📢 CfP: The #climate crisis leads to unprecedented losses & damages to real and financial #assets. But the dynamics and consequences of asset stranding are poorly understood. That´s why @trgn.bsky.social, @pgolka.bsky.social and I put together a special issue with SER academic.oup.com/ser/pages/cf...

Excited to share my paper published in ASR on unemployment and suicide!! Using big administrative data on suicide, we show that unemployed people are more likely to die by suicide, but their suicide risk is lower when and where more people are unemployed. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

A new study out with Alexi Gugushvili – on life, death, and all that, in Lancet RH. Does money buy happiness? Some may recall findings from an adversarial collaboration that concluded that happiness keeps increasing with log(income) even at high incomes, but not among the unhappiest. I found that "resolution" extremely confusing at the time.> www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
