I’ve watched the 500 for decades and they maybe would do a flyover during opening ceremonies. Not war helicopters tracking the cars down the straight as the race was getting underway. Intrusive and unnecessary. Self aggrandizing. The holiday is about war dead, not war toys.

I’ve stopped watching Indycar but not because he wins all the time. The continual silly season drama all year round, the shit TV coverage, Penske cheating and drivers forgetting they’re not supposed to be assholes on social media, and also shit engines.

Americans don’t care about that with respect to the Indy 500. There’s no jingoism associated with the competition itself (just the opening ceremonies). It’s the best race in the world and attracts the best racers in the world.
