BREAKING: @aclu.org says Trump deported a child (U.S. citizen) with metastatic cancer without medication or consultation with physicians. This is the second child with cancer he's deported. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol... @rollingstone.com

this stuff is not popular, regardless of what a vocal segment of the commentariat has convinced itself of since November 2024

I love when academics shoehorn every issue into their intellectual hobby horse. Keep it coming. 😂😉

If a Democratic Admin had done this there would be a full blown moral panic about changing the color of fruit loops. (Also its dumb) www.nytimes.com/2025/04/25/b...

We need humanities and STEM. The US is a rich country but for some reason our political leaders are acting like we are a poor country.

Please do it less quietly, Europe. US political leadership needs to be more rattled by this! www.politico.com/newsletters/...

I’m not scared of much but, to be honest, the people smoking a Marlboro and drinking a Mountain Dew at 7am kind of scare me. We used to call that “breakfast of champions” in the 80s though. 😂😂

Why is this 'lazy'? Billionaires are looting the country right now www.nytimes.com/2025/04/23/o...

Sometimes it feels like we are part of an experiment in which the governing party does extremely unpopular and harmful things -even to its own supporters - to see how it affects election outcomes. www.cnn.com/2025/04/23/w...

The trope that universities are "dependent" on the federal government fundamentally misunderstands how vital this partnership has been for the US. The private sector can't replace it. If we kill it, we're all worse off. From @donmoyn.bsky.social and me: donmoynihan.substack.com/p/are-univer...

The United States is the world's number one bullshit producer and consumer

Me: it’s too bad people have ear buds in all the time, I think it contributes to social isolation Them: listening to terrible music in earbuds

Diversity, equity and inclusion by has been replaced DEI = drunks emailing intel www.nytimes.com/2025/04/20/u...

Kind, decent, and compassionate, Pope Francis was badly out of step with contemporary western culture.

It does feel at this point that the US government might as well be being run by a cabal of its enemies, such is the wanton destruction of diplomatic, economic, social and bureaucratic capacity.

The second part of the quote that Murkowski is being pilloried for is being ignored. She said she’s scared but she’s going to use her voice because that’s what people put here there to do. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. The fact that she’s scared in the first place is the issue.

What do Americans associate with 'wokeness'? Find out now in our new open access article that @respol.bsky.social released just in time to ring in my 30th birthday! (with @benji9253.bsky.social, Kal Munis, and Spencer Goidel) journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... 🧵

Name me one person that has gotten into league with Trump and come out doing better or looking better? Putin is about it. Everyone else disgraces themselves for nothing. It is bizarre to see time and again.

Trying to exert total control over society with their hateful ideology. This goes well beyond what even most authoritarians attempt. Totalitarianism. It will never work but the fact that they are trying is scary.

RFK jr. said autistic people will never pay taxes, go on a date, or use the toilet unassisted. It sounds like he’s generalizing about all autistic people from his familiarity with Elon Musk.

Here's a gift link to my piece on my health and the horrible harms being done to cancer research by Trump, Musk and RFK Jr. Mainers, don't forget that Susan Collins was warned by Maine doctors not to vote for RFK Jr., but she did so anyway. #mepolitics www.pressherald.com/2025/04/14/t...

It it me or is it windy all the time now?

Just early published in ARPS (open access) @garlicksauce.bsky.social @wmjunk.bsky.social & I survey remarkable recent lobbying research that shows how lobbying matters & whats ahead for studies of influence www.annualreviews.org/content/jour...

I listened to the Rufo podcast and my number one takeaway was that many of the top MAGA people are just completely deranged. Musk very obviously also fits the bill.

“The decision is the most overt defiance by a university since President Trump began pressuring higher education to conform to his political priorities.” They should note that this “defiance” is of a clearly illegal and totalitarian order. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/15/u...

Guy who claims to be a master dealmaker can’t even strike a deal with one of his closest allies to secure the return of a man he mistakenly sent to prison?

Violating the rule of law continues to be the biggest story and we cannot push it from A1. Everything — separation of powers, citizenship, rights, justice — is built upon it. When the foundation crumbles, we all fall.

Trumpism is not just authoritarian, it is totalitarian in the literal sense that it tolerates no institutions in society, no aspect of people's lives, outside their agenda of political coercion. Even trying to be neutral is unacceptable. Anything they don't dominate and control must be destroyed.

The Trump administration wanted to control the most basic aspects of the university, including what is taught and who is hired. The wanted to turn Harvard into a fancy version of Trump University. And when Harvard said no, Trump used publicly funded research as a hostage.

During Trump I, there was a 12% reduction in international students during the first three years of the Trump presidency, relative to top five competing destinations.

I wrote something that is not aimed at my usual audience. What is a research university? And, more importantly, why is that important?

Straight up totalitarianism

Universities are unique in that their problems are always only their own fault. Do they have enemies? Their own behavior generated those enemies in a process only the university has agency over. Are they experiencing an external shock? It just reveals how much what they were doing sucked.

Full fascism.

The president told a Central American dictator to build five more massive slave labor camps to hold US citizens.

Americans are about to find out how reliant many industries are on China. This suggests there is some logic to trying to wean off of Chinese manufacturing. But this requires careful planning and nuance. Which is to say the last person you want leading this is Trump. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/13/b...

The joke about department website faculty photos not being updated frequently is so true. Here’s my photo from the Penn State website.

"For the past decade, American government and business alike have slowly begun to adopt the kleptocratic model pioneered by countries such as Russia and China, where the rulers’ conflicts of interest are simply part of the fabric of the system."

Almost certainly an anti-Semitic hate crime. And the President who is trying to tear up the American university system on the pretext of fighting anti-Semitism hasn't said a word.
