What would one play instead? Ashes? Intriguing...

That would be my hope as well. The impossibility of guaranteed ambush even if all the setup and tactics were done correctly would bother me too.

I could of course be wrong about how the rules state this should be handled. I haven't delved intensely deep into the 2024 rules because I've largely moved to other systems. As a DM I'd still handle it as stated above.

Technically I don't think you have to be in initiative to fire a shot so theoretically you could still get a shot off before initiative is rolled and then let that shot kick off the roll.
That's how I would run it as a DM. You take the shot and then everyone rolls initiative using surprise rules.

Hades, Wildermyth, Child of Light, Valkyria Chronicles. Your mileage may vary, but I enjoy them.

Hopefully they can fight this since the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is an independent nonprofit funded by Congress and specifically by the legislation that created it not part of or subject to the executive branch.

I played my first Mothership game this year at a Con. Bought the game afterwards and read through Warden's guide. I felt it was pretty clear in not overdoing Stat checks, but encouraged handing out stress and rolling Saves as often as needed by the fiction. Just my two cents a Mothership newbie.

If you get it let us know what you think. This has been something I keep opening in a browser tab to look at and agonize if I should buy or not.

3E was sort of just Dex, Con, and Wis even if they obfuscated it as Reflex, Fort, Will. You could distill it down to just Body and Mind saves. Then give particular classes bonuses to saves vs certain types of effects. Spellcasters are good against magic, Thieves are great against traps, etc.

I think there's also something to be said for experiential or accomplishment based alterations to characters. Maybe you survived the harrowing pilgrimage to the Temple of Eternal Ice or traded your shadow at the Night Market. Not leveling up but marked by experience, failure and triumph.

Knick Knack too divests himself of his outer clothes, flinging them behind in an attempt to distract the incoming bulls. Keeping only his precious pedlar's satchel and clad now in only a ridiculous donkey onesie he makes all haste for the exit, thanking the comfort ghost as he passes.

Knick Knack scrounges amongst the pipeworks to find a large wrench. He screeches out "All swim or all sink!" Cackling with glee he slams the wrench repeatedly into the window to shatter it.

"It wants our blessing, it does." A pale tongue flits between jagged teeth and corpse blue lips. Knick Knack crouches down, limbs akimbo as a horrid spider. Without warning they rush forward with ghoulish fury hissing madly about "warm blood and soft flesh."
