I was just reminded of Christopher Hitchens. He unfortunately went down the war hawk road in the aughts but, man, I absolutely love the way he wrote. His ability with the written word never ceases to impress me. I could read his writing all day.

Love to see it. At Book People in #austin

Finished The Last Unicorn last night. No memory of how it wound up on my reading list but it was a fun read—like a fairy tale in a fairy tale. Already into Stephen King’s On Writing, I keep hearing good things about it. #booksky

Never having a clue what movies are out I decided to pick a random #movie to see. I saw Mickey 17 this afternoon. It was as weird as I had hoped. And Pattinson did a fantastic job (the rest of the gang as well).

#libby must be the single most useful app I’ve had on my phone for years now. It feels to me like one of the bright spots in modern tech.

MacOS is my daily driver but I’m thinking of picking up Bazzite or Bluefin to see how I like ‘em. Lots of good #linux options out there

Brilliant

This speaks to me

I’ve been struck with a strong road trip desire over the last week. Oregon I think. Portland, the coast, Medford, Bend, and National Parks/Forests in between. I think that’d be super fun. #roadtrip #nationalparks

This great to read. I love Bison, Yellowstone is amazing, and Wyoming is a gorgeous state. #conservation

I love the shade being thrown in this thread. If it weren’t so late I’d brew more coffee to satisfyingly take in every comment. And I wish we’d quit it with the creepy “uncle Bob” shtick.

Officially on sale. Pre-order ships very soon. If you order now the shirt should ship roughly the week after and you can co-order it along with the Nerves shirt without delayed delivery now. https://oswag.org/b/elixir-shirt-preorder #elixirlang

Familiar with The Troubles? I finished Say Nothing earlier this evening and, wow, the book is a gripping read start to finish. #booksky

I’ve been so happy with the StoryGraph as a replacement for GoodReads. GR is hot garbage that has simply stagnated. I just wish my kindle notes/highlights could make it to SG. Anyway, check it out! #booksky #thestorygraph

#zeldas Ocarina of Time’s forest temple theme suddenly surfaced as an earworm after who knows how many years/decades. What a great game. What a great tune.

A new species and genus. And related to sunflowers. Cool.

Spending a lot of time thinking about Big Five personality research and engineering hiring. There are a lot of dots to connect and having great convos with my teams and hr connections

Also, Charmander for life.

It turns out the real cautionary tale of Jurassic Park was “don’t put tech bros in charge of efficiency”

Brené Brown found her way back into my reading list. She hit me over the head with hustling for worthiness. Interesting way to think about things 🤔

For a show with a bunch of good characters, Derek is hands down the best on Shrinking. I think it’s the pure authenticity of the character.

Such a great series. Looking forward to how it translates to tv.

Saw a great demo yesterday at the Capital Factory in #Austin on livescript—live reloading for #Elixir scripts. Only rerunning the code that changes is pretty snazzy!

An interesting, quick read on Mars!

How does perfectionism tie into academics, meritocracy, economics, advertising, social media, and more? This is an eye-opening read that gets you thinking. Can’t recommend it enough. #booksky

#WorldHippoDay 🦛: Hello from William, the (un)official mascot of the Met, & his little friend Ren, blue faience #hippos from #AncientEgypt: Hippopotamus ("William") Middle Kingdom Dyn. 12 c.1961–1878 BCE Standing Hippopotamus ("Hippopotamus of Reniseneb") Middle Kingdom Dyn. 12–13 c.1810–1700 BCE

Ever heard of “the tyranny of the shoulds”? I just came across it, coined by the psychoanalyst Karen Horney in the 50s. Now I’m wondering how it’s tied to imposter syndrome. Even perfectionism?

A magma body would be kinda cool. Mine’s just a boring old programming body. phys.org/news/2025-01...

Misunderstanding around Martin’s Single Responsibility Principle has turned into a full blown bugbear for me. It’s effectively a high-level architectural concern about *users * that request changes to code. So often I see it expressed as basically a class-level Unix philosophy.

Surprised there isn’t more obvious #elixir chatter in the Austin area. I know there are plenty of devs and companies using it. We’ll have to see what we can do about that!

I like to think of my time in Austin as an interlude before I take myself back to Denver. I’ve been to many protests at the Capitol and I’m glad to see they’re still going strong.

Last year I finally put two and two together with Zettlekasten and the Obsidian app. I’ve always been chasing this mental model to connect ideas and concepts across domains. It’s fully become an addiction!

I hate, hate, hate the usage of “resources” for people. Humanize your coworkers as the people they are. Resources are books, chairs, pencils, time, your big pile of money, etc!

Comet & Star – a cosmic fable about the rhythms and consolations of friendship

Musk can be great in a 1:1 setting. Or so it’s suggested. Interesting to consider, though it seems his ego gets the better of him in a group—which must be nearly all the time. This is a brilliant read chronicling Musk’s first brushes with Twitter up through last year.

Finished a great book on story telling. It was business focused but certainly widely applicable. It argues you need four things for a compelling story: 1) identifiable characters, 2) authentic emotion, 3) a significant moment, and 4) specific details. It’s really left me thinking 🤔

Been digging into Tadao Ando recently. Interesting character considering what he’s achieved with no formal #architecture training. And great designs!

Any takes on using the #dvorak keyboard layout? I’m tempted but expect it’ll absolutely wreck my muscle memory.

My favorite book of last year by a mile. There’s so much insight and understanding to take away from it. I can’t recommend it enough. #books www.goodreads.com/book/show/15...
