Yeah, I’m fine with on and kun readings, and even ateji and the like. It’s just surprising when I see a new compound, and I discover that not only is it a word I’ve known for ages but there was no way to guess it from the meaning or usual readings of the kanji.

While we’re on 流, the character 石 means rock or stone and is read as “ishi” or “seki”.
So of course 流石 is read as “sasuga” and means “as expected”.
