Just over half of Americans think Trump will try to serve a third term as president. (Data via YouGov)

NEW: At a time of spiritual tumult, some in Silicon Valley are seeking comfort through hopes of AI-driven immortality. But ignoring death means ignoring the great equalizer in human affairs—and closing a crucial path for finding meaning in life. By @connorechols.bsky.social: buff.ly/4bkUj90

Brian Johnson wants us to achieve immortality in order to embrace "our shared future with AI." But ignoring death destroys our chance of finding meaning in life. My latest in @nonzeronews.bsky.social, building on an excellent recent essay from Maya Vinokour www.nonzero.org/p/immortalit...

NEW: Trump has often argued the war in Ukraine “would never have started” if he’d been president at the time. @leonidragozin.bsky.social explains why that may well be right:

The Trump White House has shown that it's serious about seeking a peace deal between Kyiv and Moscow. So why is Trump going out of his way to make things as cruel toward Ukraine as possible? More from @connorechols.bsky.social: https://buff.ly/4i3zx0x

Trump deserves real credit for opening talks with Russia over the Ukraine war. But he deserves harsh criticism for trying to plunder Ukraine and trample on international law in the process, writes @connorechols.bsky.social

Trump, to his credit, has put everything on the table in Ukraine peace talks. As @quincyinst.bsky.social pointed out, the US “can employ leverage that Kyiv lacks in direct bargaining with Moscow” if it recognizes that "Moscow’s security concerns extend beyond Ukraine." https://buff.ly/4b7Llfv

Elon Musk promised this week to recuse himself from any government work that may pose a conflict of interest. To help him out, we've gone ahead and started a list: https://buff.ly/41s0yF0

NEW: For those who want to see an end to the war in Ukraine, this was a good week and a terrible week. @connorechols.bsky.social tries to split the difference https://buff.ly/3QPfxml

NEW: The Gaza ceasefire nearly collapsed this week, with Hamas threatening to delay a hostage release and Israel warning of a return to war. But the biggest obstacle to peace may well be the man who secured the deal in the first place. More from @connorechols.bsky.social https://buff.ly/41i768M

NEW: This week's Paris AI summit made one thing clear: AI accelerationism has gone global. More from @robertwrighter.bsky.social www.nonzero.org/p/a-very-bad...

Trump's proposals to annex everything from Gaza to Canada and Greenland—in addition to his decision to impose sanctions on the ICC—have taken America's disregard for global laws and norms to a whole new level, writes @connorechols.bsky.social

The forced displacement of a civilian population has been illegal under the laws of war since at least 1863. But that didn't stop Trump from floating a plan to ethnically cleanse Gaza this week, writes @connorechols.bsky.social

The more that Washington hits other countries with tariffs, the more it encourages other states to reduce their ties to the American economy, writes @connorechols.bsky.social https://buff.ly/4hOvbtn

Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed leader of the PKK, is reportedly set to make a “historic call” for an end to his group’s insurgency against Turkey—a move that could have positive reverberations across the Middle East. More of this week's news from @connorechols.bsky.social:

NEW: Whether Trump likes it or not, the unipolar moment is over, and Washington’s leverage is an easy resource to squander. More from @connorechols.bsky.social on what Trump gets wrong about American power: https://buff.ly/4hpbJnl

This week's tariff dustup is a useful reminder of how unwilling President Trump is to accept the limits of American power in a multipolar world—a refusal that will only speed up the erosion of American power over the long term. My latest in @nonzeronews.bsky.social www.nonzero.org/p/what-trump...

Iran has been warming to the idea of negotiations with the Trump administration, and Trump has done some signaling of his own. But opponents of a deal have already responded with broadsides against any form of diplomacy, writes @connorechols.bsky.social

By our count, no fewer than 19 former Biden appointees have landed at WestExec Advisors, a self-described “strategic advisory” firm that “brings the Situation Room to the Board Room.” More from @connorechols.bsky.social:

Elon Musk appears to be in the driver's seat at the start of Trump 2.0. But how long can the Trump-Musk connection survive? More from @connorechols.bsky.social:

Trump's attempts to freeze funding and lay off federal workers show just how influential Elon Musk has become, writes @connorechols.bsky.social

Some website proprietors, faced with AI companies that ignore rules against scraping their sites for data, are fighting back with “tarpits”—software that traps web crawler bots in endless loops of decoy URLs. More on this week's news from @connorechols.bsky.social: https://buff.ly/4hls64q

NEW: In the early days of Trump 2.0, the federal government is getting the full Musk treatment. More from @connorechols.bsky.social :

This past week has made one thing clear: In the early days of Trump 2.0, Elon Musk is in the driver's seat. My latest in @nonzeronews.bsky.social: www.nonzero.org/p/washington...

When Assad fell, Israel invaded southeast Syria and attacked military sites around the country. Many on the left saw this as proof that Israel is an imperial state bent on expansion. But the real reason is less sinister—and more insidious, writes @connorechols.bsky.social https://buff.ly/4h44gK3

The US is flanked by two friendly neighbors and two great oceans, yet Washington still acts as if no threat were too distant to be dangerous. @connorechols.bsky.social explains why this quest for total security is likely to backfire:

Important piece.

NEW: Like many great powers, the US has failed to learn that pursuing too much security can be just as dangerous as pursuing too little. Now, its striving for total security is set to further erode the “rules-based order”—and perhaps even spark a great power war, writes @connorechols.bsky.social

Trump's calls for territorial expansion are a logical extension of Washington's worst instinct: the desire to seek "total security" from all potential threats. In my latest for @nonzeronews.bsky.social, I explain how this total-security paradigm leaves all of us less safe. buff.ly/4hrjAk2

Tech leaders who have yet to find their way into Trump’s inner circle are now working hard to get there. More on the looming tech takeover from Andrew Day and @connorechols.bsky.social https://buff.ly/3PGob5W

President Biden and President-elect Trump each took credit for the Israel-Hamas ceasefire scheduled to commence this weekend. Of the two, though, Trump may have the stronger claim, write Andrew Day and @connorechols.bsky.social:

Trump once rode into office alongside a ragtag team of populists. Eight years later, his team looks a lot less ragtag, and a lot less populist. Read The Looming Tech Takeover, by Andrew Day and @connorechols.bsky.social:

More than one in four Americans who voted for Joe Biden in 2020 but not for Kamala Harris in 2024 cited “ending Israel’s violence in Gaza” as the issue that had the most bearing on their decision, according to a new poll: https://buff.ly/40lvWDl

A year ago, President Biden acknowledged that bombing the Houthis wasn't "working." In his remarks today—after a year of airstrikes in Yemen—Biden stressed the need to "keep the pressure" on the Houthis. And in almost the next breath repeated the claim that the US is not at war.

Democrats once pilloried Republicans for advocating a military showdown with Iran. Now, they're joining the march to bombing Tehran's nuclear facilities. More from Andrew Day and @connorechols.bsky.social: https://buff.ly/4h5U8QG
