i want to see this energy and not a scintilla less

I know I’ve said this several times recently, but I’m really impressed by and grateful for my students this semester. 💜

I'm happy to say that @asanews.bsky.social has joined @democracyforward.org in filing a lawsuit challenging the Department of Ed's "Dear Colleague" letter. If followed, the letter threatens to strip core sociological concepts from classrooms, depriving students from learning basic social truths.

James Carville’s advice, as usual, is shit. Democrats, do you want every constituent to be absolutely furious with you and completely disillusioned? Then sure, sit back and wait for Trump to collapse I guess

I owe the television part of my career to @joyannreid.bsky.social, as do so many other Black voices y'all never would have heard of if not for her. And *that's* why she's gone. They can treat black folks as interchangeable, but everybody Black knows that Joy was indispensable.

Fecking cowards

I waited until I had time to check this, but this is appalling: NOWHERE in this piece does it note that this is NOT the law, and in fact, the person they interview once says "if any of their programs are violating the law" WHICH THE EO IS NOT. This is just irresponsible reporting.

Gonna need more non-disabled people to see stuff like this and understand that ableism is also one of the integral -isms the right is devoted to, so it should be jettisoned whenever and in whomever you encounter it

New ED letter on civil rights. Schools have two choices right now - file a lawsuit and let it go to the SC and not comply, or to comply. It's critical to academic freedom that they do the first. @penamerica.bsky.social @everylibrary.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2025/02/17/u...

NEW: The National Science Foundation fired nearly 170 workers this morning. They include people who had already cleared their one-year probationary period only to have it changed to two years earlier this month. @kimzetter.bsky.social reports for @wired.com www.wired.com/story/nation...

Margaret is one of several colleagues I’m losing at 1:00p today, including one of my best friends who finally got his dream job 5 months ago. Fuck all of this.

I know I post about this a lot BUT! Univ of Texas explicitly adopted standardized testing post-Brown v Board in order to keep the number of Black students they admitted as low as possible. They wrote about it so we know. The school admitted to it a few years back.

A lot of things are clearly not great right now but one great thing is that I keep running out of time in my senior seminar because the students want to participate so much. It’s like a dream!

For those thinking the NYT grew a spine, hold tight… even in this piece they equivocate on sports and trans youth care.

for every 50 likes i’ll provide proof that muppets are being murdered for fashion.

Nothing knocks out cancer like gutting NIH.

Flashback to an article of mine, in which I argued that stranger danger panics around trans women had replaced gay men as the focus of these panics.

SpaceX got $3 billion in taxpayer funding in 2023 alone.

Research universities are often the largest employers in their region. They are often the primary health care providers to communities. This funding shift will not only reduce US research leadership, it will put working people out of work and reduce healthcare access.

This is a hard question for me because there are just SO MANY OF US

I'm confused about how the AP put out a story titled, "Why conservative American evangelicals are among Israel’s strongest supporters" with no mention of evangelical beliefs about Israel helping kick off the end times and the return of Christ. THAT'S THE MAIN THING. apnews.com/article/isra...

Do you ever have one of those teaching days where, at the end of it, it feels like it was tough and didn’t go well, even though you can’t exactly pinpoint why you feel that way?

@philipncohen.com getting right to the point. “If we let Trump kill programs like this, we lose our society.” Ask yourself now what you're willing to be fired over familyinequality.wordpress.com/2025/02/02/a...

This is a huge tragedy. And it’s also part of a big increase in pedestrian fatalities caused by America’s obsession with SUVs. Hug a sociologist today, and help us build a world where SUVs disappear. www.reuters.com/world/us/tal...

A panel on the Treasury this Thursday, with the incredible @epopppp.bsky.social and @abenewman.bsky.social. This is not just for academics. Everyone needs to understand what's happening right now. Spread the word!

What in the actual fuck are we doing here

Sir, you are the Senator from the Great State of New York. May I say as your constituent, you're speaking to us as if you aren't a Senate leader who has been there a long time. My disappointment comes from the lack of plan my electeds have. Why am I working HARDER than you? We need BOLD right now

California DOE fires back against Trump's executive order: "It does nothing" "It is against federal law for the White House to dictate what educators can and cannot teach" Will not comply.

I find this as disturbing as anything that's happened so far. They're just erasing huge swaths of knowledge. www.statnews.com/2025/01/31/c...

Chuck Schumer has a lot of nerve emailing to ask for money to help him stand up to Trump’s agenda, as if he’s actually doing so…

I want the public to hear from every university president by 12 noon tomorrow. I am so serious

Stop fucking saying he blamed “DEI,” which is some abstract, non-tangible idea. He is blaming people of color having jobs he thinks they aren’t qualified for. He’s blaming race. He’s being racist every time he says it. Journalists need to get fucking backbones, my word.

There's a fairly direct line from the @nytimes.com "just asking questions" about trans healthcare to the executive order banning gender-affirming care. What I'm saying is that Times reporters have blood on their hands.

This is something I have long said, too — getting liberal-to-progressive parents (who, in theory, are highly pro-public education) to pull their kids from public schools is part of the plan to dismantle public education.

Here's the letter. Copy and paste, fill in the details, add your flair if you want. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

it really doesnt help that sarah mcbride keeps legitimizing the “this is just a distraction” narrative. the only trans woman in congress and anytime people look to her for leadership on this issue she gives them permission to look away

It's going to take ALL of us to fight back. We can't let trans and GNC youth stand on the front lines alone, and we can't sacrifice them to any piss-poor attempt to appeal to the mythical swing voter or 'moderate Republican.' Make them go through us first.

Helpful thread on the “patriotic education” part of the K-12 EO.

1. Breaking News: Donald Trump has signed an executive order targeting trans youth and teachers in schools who teach for them. It goes after "social transition" and threatens arrests. I will go through line by line, as I have the last 3 nights. Find the EO here: www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...
