New from me. Wrote about Western alienation, Mark Carney and the Corey Hogan, the new Liberal MP for Calgary Confederation. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

'"We can't cede the conversation space. We need to be in the conversation," Hogan says of Albertans who like him oppose separation. "If we love this country, we need to fight for this country. And Albertans love this country, so it's time to stand up."' www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

“From 1981 to 2015, there were an average of 18 smoke hours per year in the city of Calgary. No year had over 100. Now we see hundreds of smoke hours routinely: 315 in 2017, 450 in 2018, 439 in 2021, 512 in 2023, and 2024 was ‘only’ 200.”

Come for the news about me being Parliamentary Secretary for Energy and Natural Resources, stay for the transition to my official Commons photo that makes me look like I aged a decade in the last month. www.ctvnews.ca/calgary/vide...

Another poll, courtesy ‬Abacus Data that shows Alberta separatists are loud, but they are not anywhere close to the majority. Let’s not let this issue distract us from the important Canada-building work we have ahead.

Sad news. I was lucky enough to meet Marc Garneau over the years and Canada has lost an incredible statesman. One of our most interesting Canadians and a wonderful man. www.ctvnews.ca/montreal/art...

Last night the House had an emergency debate on the wildfires in the west and this morning the Liberal Prairies and North caucus met to discuss the situation. Read my remarks to the House last night here: www.ourcommons.ca/documentview...

It’s amazing to me that not wearing a tie is considered a greater offence to the dignity of the House of Commons than the average question period.

When I worked for the Alberta Government, I had a colleague who’d start growing a beard when budget meetings began in August, not shave until the budget was delivered in March. I sit here thinking about that as Conservatives continue to insist a budget be delivered in one month.

Alberta separatism isn't getting more popular, but those who support it are getting louder. If separatist voices dominate the conversation, the damage to investor confidence, attracting talent, and civic life will be enormous. Love Canada? Say it loudly. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

In the words of Mark Twain, Conservative news of the oil and gas industry’s death has been greatly exaggerated. capp.ca/wp-content/u...

It begins

It's official

Amore e unità. With the PM, parliamentary colleagues and other invited guests I was part of the Canadian delegation that attended the inaugural mass of Pope Leo XIV today. Against this storied backdrop, the Pope delivered a call for love and unity. (1/x)

Well this is a wild feeling. Going to represent you best I can, Calgary Confederation.

“We need people from across the political spectrum — if they love this country — to stand up and knock down some of the arguments [for separation] that are out there.” www.ctvnews.ca/calgary/arti...

"Try to stop me from being a spokesperson for this country."

I've been hesitant to write something like this because I didn't want to give oxygen to Alberta separatists. The conversation alone is dangerous. But with the threshold to a separation referendum lowered so dramatically, we can't let myths out there go unchecked. www.coreyhogan.ca/p/three-albe...

On Election Day, I sat down with Ryan Sauvé on my campaign and he asked my thoughts on the campaign, Canada, volunteers, and democracy. It captured a moment where I, an exhausted and sunburned candidate who needed a haircut, didn't know what was going to happen. Now, the work begins.

Danielle Smith describes Albertans as being divided into three camps: federalists, autonomists, and separatists. How big are these groups, and how do they differ? @jlisayoung.bsky.social and I examined this a few years ago. 🔗 www.commongroundpolitics.ca/albertan-ori...

Confederation is like a family. Ultimatums, threats and escape plans are not a way to make a family work. Premier Smith should ask herself what her intentions are here. Is she comfortable with where this might lead? Are we, as Albertans? Let’s be constructive. Canada is worth it.

Growing western alienation is a tantalizing storyline and it gets clicks and eyeballs, I'm sure, but it is not borne out by the facts. Alberta-first identity is on the decline, not increase.

Loud voices might make you think otherwise, but Albertans are more committed to Canada, not less: "While 22% identify primarily as Albertan, more than 3/4 see themselves as Canadian... support for an Alberta-first identity [is below the 28%] found in 2020." www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

In the late 1970s, the corporate tax rate was the same or lower in Quebec than Ontario. But corporations and head offices were going the other way - from Montreal to Toronto. Stoking the coals of separatism helps nobody. It's a small and impractical idea - and it's bad for business.

UPDATE: got to Ottawa.

So what did everybody else get up to tonight?

The waiting game sucks,
