Oh no! I just read that the NICER instrument on ISS is having issues. Urgh, not the times to have telescopes becoming non-operational ….

Happy Centennial to Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush, first released on this day in 1925. One his funniest pictures, and also his most achingly tender rumination of loneliness and our desire to be seen and understood.

New microwave background measurements from the South Pole Telescope - better than satellite data (Planck) at small scales! Mostly compatible with Ξ›CDM, except for the Hubble tension (still there) and hints of dynamical dark energy when combined with other data. pole.uchicago.edu/public/data/...

i have checked and there is nothing in the rule book that says a dog can not be james bond

What team are you on? Pink Moon, Purple Moon, Golden Moon, or New Moon πŸŒ‘

Just saw a friend back home had to say bye to their doggo mate, and it is always so heartbreaking. πŸ’” Even if the dog isn’t mine, when you spend time with them, you form immediate bonds that last forever. It’s one of the hardest things about owning a pet. We have to say goodbye one day.

We have a mascot for #IPTA25! Well, I have appointed one informally …. But I doubt anyone would have objections. It is this gorgeous boy, Amari, who is also with us at the conference hearing all the latest on pulsar timing and low-frequency gravitational waves here at Caltech!

πŸ• βœ… I saw a Coyote on campus today (this is from a few days ago, taken by someone in our group)

We've been looking for low-freq. gravitational waves using pulsar timing arrays .... but there's some neat work being done to look for GWs (a little higher in frequency, even the chirp of merging supermassive black hole binaries!) using astrometry! This is *super interesting* work! πŸ”πŸ§ͺ #IPTA25

OMG …. FRIENDS …. I SEE THE SECRET IMAGE. Just wasted about 20 mins of my life trying to see if I could see this. Was having real Narnia fears (that as I got older I could no longer see these!) … but it worked! It’s the small things … Do you see it?!

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has found evidence of a cold, Saturn-mass planet around the star TWA 7, seemingly sculpting its disc of debris! If confirmed, this would be Webb’s first direct image discovery of a planet. Read more πŸ‘‰ www.esa.int/Science_Expl... πŸ” πŸ§ͺ β˜„οΈ

I give you a momentary reprieve from the madness: The Vera Rubin Observatory has taken its first images of the sky, and they are *extraordinary*. Mind blowing detail, jaw dropping beauty. badastronomy.beehiiv.com/p/rubin-open... πŸ” πŸ§ͺ

No matter the situation, one of the radar dishes (his ears) has to be on standby at all times. Photos of little mate from back home πŸ₯ΉπŸ’™

can't wait to get there this weekend, and be dancing with all the queer Banshees. Literally, there will be dancing on the streets.

Sooo … gave my talk at #IPTA25 today, and thought it went well! Really enjoyed it actually, did a lot of prep prior and it paid off. I’m so excited to have shared our new and exiting results about the Problem Child #pulsar β€” the story is not over yet, there is one last chapter left to tell …

Cause of death: Pedro Pascal for Vanity Fair

Really nice to see this paper by Jaimie Sheil in PASA. Jaimie faced a lot of medical challenges and couldn't complete her PhD, but she did excellent work to produce this paper. Short story - LINERs are very common in massive star forming galaxies. Why is unclear. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Looks like PRIDE w’end in NYC is gonna be a whole lotta fun this coming weekend! Queeeeeerrrzzz β€” come say hi!

NEW: WaPo has a letter we organized from thousands of LGBTQ ppl (including prominent artists like @lillywachowski.bsky.social @kathleenhanna.bsky.social @rosemontoya.bsky.social) telling politicians: DON'T COME TO PRIDE if you support censorship bills like KOSA www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Why are there two LIGO observatories? LIGO has two detectors ~3000 km apart for three main reasons: 🎧 Noise discrimination ⏰ Signal timing πŸ—ΊοΈ Source localization Find out more www.ligo.caltech.edu/page/ligo-de... Graphic by Mayara Pacheco πŸ”πŸ§ͺ

I am one of those younger astronomers, lolololol 🌊

Still spinning out at Trifid Nebula’s reflection nebula halo. Imaged by @vrubinobs.bsky.social (I made some adjustments to darken background and increase sharpness in this version). We’re looking at three types of nebulae β€” created by dust and ionized gas β€” a bubble carved in space by hot stars.

πŸ”πŸ§ͺ A comparison of a smaller region by DESI vs Rubin β€” shoddily lined up by eye, taken as screenshots from the compressed photos in the post below, and STILL the difference is THIS obvious 🀯 @vrubinobs.bsky.social is truly going to be revolutionary!

I would be *extremely grumpy*
