I think it’s important to give credit to the Senators so didn’t vote for this. There are 38 of them.

Gotta be specific. 9 aren’t shutting down the government to try and reign it in.

The thing that has me most unnerved is that Jeffries apparently didn’t know this was the plan. Schumer needed to signal he wouldn’t back this earlier. Frankly after the GOP budget vote it should have been clear they’d get the House members in line just enough to se this through.

They’re not doing this intentionally. Thymes just don’t care about the harm and would rather be poorer on a societal level than broadly successful at that level with more taxes and such.

Schumer cares. He understands that his party wants to fight. I think he genuinely thinks the shutdown fight ultimately loses and he wants the focus on Trump as he hemorrhages support not on a shutdown fight he never planned to fight to win or at least lose loudly.

Agreed. The issue here is one of communication, which was absent inside the party and out. The House leadership seems as surprised by Schumer as anyone else. That’s a big problem. The number one job of the leader is to keep people together. That failed here.

The confusion for too many was that in his first term he was undone by a team that didn’t align with his desires so he’d say crazy things and there was no follow through. But he always wanted to do those things. Now he has the people to do his bidding.

No he thinks Trump wants the shutdown. But that’s wrong. Trump will keep on destroying no matter what. What you have to do is make it very clear that’s what’s happening and who is doing it and complicit. The trouble with his plan is that either way it will happen but he votes for in only one.

It’s going to suck ass. In the middle of the year no less. There’s just no room to not cut deep. I know people whose souse was already laid off by the feds that could be laid off by DC Gov now too.

I’m most mad that they played the hand this way. I accept that they just didn’t believe they had leverage here. I don’t agree but it’s what they thought. Then they should have just made a deal weeks ago. This bill is worse than what they could have gotten otherwise and it makes them look weak.

Agreed, and I put that as part of the Trump era. He’s just from a different world from where politics is now.

Schumer was selected with President Hilary Clinton in mind. He’s just lost in the Trump era.

Interesting group. A lot of the front line folks not in there, but some are. Shows this is in part a strategic/tactical debate.

I find Dems fear here so predictable but also so strange in light of the last two months. They are stuck on the idea of being “moderate” and “reasonable” as the response to losing, but pushing back on the gutting the VA or Social Security or Education are not extreme positions.

I’m lost on why Dem Senators think the downside risk here is so large. They’re already openly saying they’ll keep playing Calvin ball no matter what so what’s the risk here?

Yes, some of her reported specific comments are odd. Is shutting down the VA going to be popular? That’s the check on Trump. If the public sees that he’s being extreme on the shutdown and not trying to undo it that’s a good opportunity for them to get upset.

No one is comfortable admitting how exposed everyone is right now. It’s a strange feeling. There’s comfort in the illusion that one path holds more “safety” than another. Dems are typically people who live their lives making the safe, sensible choice. But that’s not an option right now.

You should defend those programs.
