Beyond Tramp's arrogance, there another reason people got really mad at Gulf of Mexico's name replacement: We globally accepted the Usean hegemony of America == USA Americans == Useans Mexico is in America. Mexicans are Americans. And Gulf of Mexico has always been an American gulf by default.

Joke aside. Where to we stretch the boundaries between what defines a sect and what defines a different religion? For a long time Christians and we're considered sect of the same religion. Retroactively we mark the point where they separate. When do sects become religions?
