You truly could not make it up. You could not.

Unsurprising, but also 🫨🫨🫨

I am curious as to the roles these service members occupied and what training exercises they were involved in. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families.

WTAF is going on here?

“Indeed, as a court in this Circuit recently noted, while ‘the government is normally entitled to a presumption of good faith,’ ‘the court will not confer that presumption when the government says one thing while expressly doing another.’ Nat'l Council of Nonprofits v. OMB … (D.D.C. Feb. 25, 2025).”

The rule of law means the law applies equally to all and due process is accorded to every person. It doesn’t mean that the law itself is necessarily good, but not arbitrary. This is why I also mention moral depravity and constitutional rot as overlapping with rule of law issues, but also distinct.

New Politics, a group focused on supporting candidates from service backgrounds, is launching a multimillion-dollar effort to recruit thousands of candidates over the next four years.

Trump and MAGA's absurd handling of Signalgate aptly demonstrates why authoritarian populism that shapes everything around the leader's infallibility often delivers bad outcomes. On the pod, @zackbeauchamp.bsky.social is brilliant on this idea. Don't miss this one: newrepublic.com/article/1932...

Words cannot fully express my outrage at this gleeful promotion of the United States collaborating with a foreign government to hold people in a concentration camp. Fuck Nazis. Fuck Nazism. Never stop fighting it.

they’re all thinking it only she had the nerve to say it

A certain kinda person really thinks macho vibes are what make for military success, and so thinks liberal states are bad at war. But rationalised logistics and immense productive capacity are actually very good at winning wars and liberal capitalist societies can martial those well and quickly.

"A doctoral student at the University of Alabama was detained by federal immigration authorities, ... one of more than half a dozen students who have been targeted by the Trump administration in recent weeks." "Alireza Doroudi, an Iranian citizen" www.nytimes.com/2025/03/26/u...

One gazillion times this.

The Constitution's Election Clause gives power over the time, place, and manner of elections to the states. Congress can pass laws about elections, but the president has no power by himself to dictate election policy to the states. www.cbsnews.com/video/can-tr...

Another reason it is cowardly to simply obey and let them take over your newsroom or university is that if you don’t they often will be like “well fuck, that was our main idea”

It simultaneously infringes on the Polish constitution, EU law and international law. Shocking even more, as the justice minister used to be a well known human rights activist, and the vice-minister of interior in charge of migration - a renowned migration scholar. www.bbc.com/news/article...

If you don't want to see this horrible garbage happen in every future high-stakes election, make sure it demonstrably fails in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race by helping elect Susan Crawford

Shot.

Chaser.

We're paying attention to what, four prominent cases? But the State Department says there are another 296. www.axios.com/2025/03/27/t...

“Sorry kid I know you wanted to go to camp this summer but instead you need to pick oranges because Republicans deported innocent workers to throw racist red meat at their base.”

You do see how Trump purports to "solve problems." "I'm defending the Jews from antisemitism!" (instead eviscerating the First Amendment and promoting Nazis). "I'm protecting children from autism!" (instead eviscerating access to vaccines and exposing all of us to eradicated communicable diseases).*

you lost me at Ralph Nader

Endless shakedowns and ransom notes. Universities will hang together or hang separately.

SignalGate Isn’t About Signal The Trump cabinet’s shocking leak of its plans to bomb Yemen raises myriad confidentiality and legal issues. The security of the encrypted messaging app Signal is not one of them. www.wired.com/story/signal...

What people in every part of higher education need to understand is that Republicans now want to do to universities what they’ve tried to do to labor unions: erase them from the institutional landscape. The question is how much you want to collaborate in your own destruction.

Glad DNI Gabbard reaffirmed the right of federal employees to speak personally, as while I am banned from gender analysis on duty, personal view but this administration's entire grand strategy is performative masculinity. You need to read Carol Cohn, not Kennan. Freedom seeds??? 🤦‍♂️

NEW! The Trump administration appears to have sent a married father with NO CRIMINAL RECORD in any country to rot in a prison in El Salvador because of a PAPERWORK ERROR. This man doesn’t even have tattoos! But his paperwork has two different peoples’ ID numbers listed and the wrong last name!

this is almost exactly the inciting incident in Brazil

This is just stunning. HHS has abruptly canceled more than $12 billion in federal grants to states that were being used for tracking infectious diseases, mental health services, addiction treatment and other urgent health issues.

I had missed this detail earlier, but we're at the people won't speak to the media for "fear of retaliation from the government" stage of things.

Shutting down the USCIS ombudsman will put more pressure on lawmakers' constituent services and the courts to resolve issues with immigration benefits. And it will mean much less transparency at the agency, attorneys and former officials told me and my @bgov.com colleague Ellen Gilmer.

In other news, Der Spiegel found private phone numbers, email addresses and some passwords for Waltz, Gabbard and Hegseth online www.spiegel.de/internationa...

The [checks notes] NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR did not know to set his Venmo to private

Everyone I know who works in politics has better opsec than the national security advisor

If they're this careless with their own personally identifiable information, imagine how careless they are being with yours.

BIG rebuke of Trump administration by the DC Circuit on Alien Enemies Act. Upholds Judge Boasberg's order. Conservative jurist, Judge Henderson's concurring opinion cuts through the noise. "[A]n invasion is a military affair, not one of migration." Great analysis of what USG wanted to do here.⬇️
