Erdogan's main ally Bahçeli has always maintained the same course: the stabilisation/consolidation of the regime. This means rejecting any early elections, extending the popular alliance and the presidential system, and therefore supporting Erdogan's re-election. www.hurriyet.com.tr/gundem/mhp-l...

At the International Family Forum in Istanbul, #Erdogan declared the period 2026-2035 the decade of the family and set out the usual lines of his discourse on the subject: cultural imperialism targeting the family, plans to neutralise gender with LGTBT + t24.com.tr/haber/erdoga...

They've changed the rules and structure of municipal governance a few times over the years, sometimes (in some ways) increasing municipal power, sometimes decreasing it, but always in a way that benefits the AKP. Elise Massicard wrote an great paper on this:

Erdogan warned some time ago that ‘more radishes’ would be coming out of the bag, to use his favourite expression. This is indeed the case, as a fourth wave of arrests has been made as part of the operation against the mayor of Istanbul Imamoglu, the second of the week. medyascope.tv/2025/05/23/i...

An illustration of how judicial repression works in Turkey? Although no indictment has been drawn up against the Mayor of Istanbul, the gendarmerie has concentrated all its efforts on building up the organisational chart of the 'criminal organisation’ to which Ekrem İmamoğlu is allegedly linked.

While the bilateral relationship between Ankara and Riyad is one to watch at the moment, Ömer Taşpınar publishes an excellent article on the factors behind the emerging Turkish-Saudi entente : Syria, the Palestinian question, defence cooperation, etc. agsi.org/analysis/tur...

This is not the first time that Erdogan has said that he does not want to stand for re-election. And frankly, there are doubts about this: the difficulty of establishing a consensus on a leader's candidacy, the absence of figures with the stature of a potential successor.

In a conversation with journalists on the plane back to Turkey after a meeting in Budapest of the Organisation of Turkic States, Erdogan noted that he is not concerned about being reelected or running again.

In a context where the municipal level is at the heart of the opposition's strategy to strengthen its bases, I'm not sure we're yet aware of the earthquake that the new reform of municipal powers could cause in Turkey. A few points : 👇 haber.sol.org.tr/haber/beledi...

This is, unambiguously, a good thing and, credit where credit is due, it was Trump who pushed the Israelis to make it happen.

1/2 Three key articles to understand Turkey's growing geopolitical influence in Europe : - Simona Scotti on the growing partnership between Ankara and Rome, particularly in defense (top-center.org/en/analytics...)

This is groundbreaking. CNN Türk reports on Chinese spies and electronic surveillance in Turkey. It's been a long time since anyone heard this kind of anti-China rhetoric on Turkish mainstream media. mediahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX7ESFfVEM8

DEM has long called for improved prison conditions for not just Öcalan, but also for critically ill prisoners. With the peace process underway, one of Ankara’s first moves might have been the release of a sick inmate on May 12, after the PKK announcement. @meltemakyol.bsky.social has the details:

Taking part in the Qatar Economic Forum, M.Şimşek was asked about the operations against Istanbul's metropolitan municipality, the arrest of istanbul mayor İmamoğlu, and its impact on investors. The Turkish economy minister responded by not once mentioning these events. t24.com.tr/haber/katar-...

Turkey ranks 107th on the Corruption Perceptions Index (loss of 16 places in 12 years), which points to a glaring lack of independence in the fight against corruption. It also shows that corruption has become a political weapon used to discipline/repress the opposition. t24.com.tr/yazarlar/cig...

2 points in Abdulkadir Selvi's latest column : 1) the creation of a parliamentary commission linked to the solution process with Ocalan (legalization and democratization phase) will take place after disarmement has been completed (no concessions before?) + www.hurriyet.com.tr/yazarlar/abd...

A critical summary by Selim Kuneralp of the European Parliament's 2023-2024 report on Turkey. The report stresses that the recent rapprochement in strategic and security matters must not constitute an alternative for Ankara to meeting the conditions for accession. serbestiyet.com/gunun-yazila...

Bahceli's call to form a parliamentary commission entitled "The New Century's 'Turkey with no Terror' Strategy, National Unity and Solidarity Commission" will be the new battleground for meaning and political action. For some, it is an attempt to strengthen the parliament over the executive.

While a third wave of arrests has just affected the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, including Taner Çetin, head of the press department, the Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu has been jailed for over two months... without an indictment. tr.euronews.com/2025/05/20/i...

“We, as PJAK, will neither lay down arms nor dissolve ourselves,” Amir Karimi, PJAK co-chair, told Aryen TV. The question of how Ankara will manage PJAK remains. Pro-government Turkish columnists were talking about negotiations, but without many details. www.rudaw.net/english/midd...

Zagros Hiwa's (KCK Spokesperson) demands are not only out of step with the PKK's declaration of dissolution, they also seem unrealistic: Ocalan's release is not on Ankara's agenda, nor is withdrawal from Iraq (Turkish bases are to be used for surrender operations). www.newarab.com/news/iraq-re...
