The easier it is to create something, the less likely the final product will be one of quality. "What makes it harder makes it better." - Greg Daniels

Fill the pot. Boil the water. Let the water cool. Run it through a sieve to catch silt. Run some through a filter to make it drinkable. Heat some again to wash dishes. Wake up to realize the water is all used up. Start over. I feel so lucky this is only temporary here.

Perfect shirt to wear to a literary scholar and educator's grave or what? My mom taught me this by raising me in basically a library. Gosh, I was a lucky kid. Thousands of books at home, 0 restrictions on what I was allowed to read. Now I wear this whenever my guy tells me to purge books.

Just discovered the anniversary of my mom's death is also Random Acts of Kindness Day. What a perfect legacy for a very generous woman, even if not actually correlated! So, please, on behalf of my family, get out there and show some kindness! We could all use some. www.randomactsofkindness.org

Your assigned meditation for today:

If you're mad and find yourself yelling that you want someone launched into the Sun, take a moment, calm yourself, and remember that it takes a lot less Delta v to launch them out of the Solar System instead. You can be mad, but that's no excuse to be inefficient with propellant.

It's amazing how the music of our adolescence and young adulthood sticks better than any other. I can remember every damn word and lick from this underground band I saw maybe 15-20 times when I was ~20-21 after unearthing their album today. The lyrics to my own songs? HARD. Brains are weird.

Amazing find from my mom's library.

Gentrification: When you look out the window at the neighborhood you moved to bc it was affordable and realize the nicer Porsches are the mid-range cars now. Not just in garages, but street parked! Who street parks a supercar???

It blows my mind how many people spend a lot of their day just trashing a video game or movie franchise in fan spaces. I get venting, but I mean people who spend years on end just trashing something regularly. Why is complaining more fun than, say, finding a game you enjoy and playing it?

My favourite book is Daughter of Persia by Sattareh Farman Farmaian. She arrived in America from Iran in 1944 and noticed Americans weren't afraid to talk about problems. I see the same now: Americans boldly say dictatorship, coup, violating the Constitution. I think this will be their strength.

Two of my favorite places: Yosemite and the Pleiades 😉 “Pleiades over Half Dome” - today’s #apod 📸: Dheera Venkatraman apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap25012... #space #astronomy

Sometimes you just have to stop and savor the best things in life for a few moments. My parents taught me to equally appreciate both the finest and the simplest pleasures in life. To love both the dirty water dog and the Michelin stars. Today I am grateful for that lesson more than ever.

I am grateful for buttons. Tangible ones, not digital. I am grateful for dials. I am grateful for controls that are available right on a device and a remote or app might be included but is not required for the device to fully function. I am grateful when these things are clearly labeled.

Why ISN’T this a thing?

A total solar eclipse passed over Long Island and part of New York City #OTD in 1925. Astronomers recorded the event from the US Navy dirigible Los Angeles, positioned near Montauk Point. 🧪 🔭 🎈⛵️ Here's a clip of their footage. Video: US Navy footage

Working by a front window, so getting in some people-watching while wrapping mindless tasks. Noticed that at least 70% of the parents/caretakers walking kids to school/daycare this morning are men. Usually not something I'd note, but right now, it's nice to see men being dads, not just fathers.

No matter how impressive your space robots, the human brains of the science community continue to be the most important part of space exploration.

Sometimes I wonder if my mom and I would have learned to get along and become friends in my adulthood, if she had lived. And then I look at the china she chose as her fine tableware and think there's a good chance we would have. Because I'd have picked this in a heartbeat myself! #grief #healing

My sister’s Nola snow lady ☃️

We have a pair of neighbors who have a pair of dogs. It is amazing how different these dogs are depending on which human is with each. I'm pretty sure the lady makes one anxious as hell, lots of barking and agitation, scared of everyone. Totally chill and friendly with the gentleman in tow.

Since I mostly left SM for such a long time, I forgot how being virtually surrounded by people I know doing really cool stuff is so helpful in just getting up and doing the things I genuinely want to do myself. Thanks for being a giant pack of good influences and examples!

Did your child lose their book collection in the Los Angeles fires? Are you a teacher at a school that lost its library or your classroom library? Whether you need one book or a whole library, we can replace your books. 📚 Everyone else, please boost this post so we can connect with those in need. 🙏

This sounds like something @ollyhogben.bsky.social would say if he covered space as well as sports. The "unintentional dismount" of space, if you will.

Space Dollars!!!

Friends, it's still dark in Hawaii. And the Halemaʻumaʻu crater webcam at  Kīlauea is showing some impressive pre-dawn fountains and lava pooling. Just in case you're interested in 🌋and such. www.youtube.com/usgs/live

It's normal to start your day by watching a new rocket's launch replay and then a live volcano stream while dancing to your favorite band no one has ever heard of, right? It really should be. Thanks, Blue Origin, the USGS, and Native! nativenyc.bandcamp.com/album/and-th...
