Thanks for the reminder to schedule a rewatch of TITUS at some point... www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkDI...

The really awful thing is that none off this is insane - it is the cold rationality of those who do not now, never have and never will see "those people" as fully human at all. I get why this is so stunningly malignant an awful lot of people just refuse to see it, but how's that working out?

OTOH, maybe I'm just getting more easily irritated with age. A distinction without a practical distance, but if the Auckland Diocese is so short of ready cash I'm sure they'd rake in the coin for this prime position Ponsonby character residence! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishop%...

Probably all of them, and this is how I get radicalised into a straight-up Commie who will nationalize everything I can pry from the cold dead hands of the haute bourgeoisie.

I can't even with the kind of idiocy that would prompt a landlord to pretty brutally fuck over a stable tenant to put a property on the block at the bottom of a stagnant market.

What really worries me is that there's an awful lot about the book trade - from general bookselling through specialists to secondhand/antiquarian - that you can't learn from an online course. You start snuffing out the experience and institutional memories, that has consequences.

On Lambton Quay? I pretty much keep my eyes closed when passing through the Wellington CBD nowadays, just to prevent a fatal cranial rage bleed. I'm also still pissed that the Parsons in Auckland shuttered, despite all good faith efforts to sell it as a going concern.

Absolutely not, but my train of thought was prompted by this foolishness from my Catholic diocese that should stick to its knitting... newsroom.co.nz/2025/06/09/c...

Thanks for that - and not just because I agree with 99.9% of what you said! I have a lot of respect for Ira Steven Behar's pretty frank "yeah, the suits would have said no but we should have pushed harder for better" self-own on the show's queer representation.

Does it hurt being such a useful idiot, Senator?

You surmise correctly.

So, Governor Newsom, who were you scolding "remain peaceful, and you'll be fine"? How's that working out?

Having had a Klingon in kinky boots with a whip burned into my memory by the latest Strange New Worlds trailer, I find your logic... persuasive.

Absolutely fair - Hanks is leading a cast that is bring their A-game all along the line, and while Mendes' direction may be leaden you can't say the same for Conrad Hall's cinematography. Really earned his (posthumous) Oscar - could put every frame on a gallery wall without special pleading.

Spoilers, what spoilers? I was otherwise distracted by A FREAKING KLINGON WITH A WHIP, BECAUSE WHY THE HELL NOT? :)

I liked Road to Perdition a lot, but I can understand why a lot of people find it a very hard film to love. Sam Mendes is a great theatre director - the cast here are wonderful and the production value is *chef's kiss* - but he really doesn't have a feel for what works cinematically.

Oh, absolutely - it was like the very unfriendly reception they got when they raided that fashionable restraurant in one of the whitest, most affluent neighbourhoods in San Diego and didn't get the open-armed welcome they so obviously expected.

Let's just say I'm very happy to be a very long way around the Pacific rim from this rapidly escalating shit show. Happy if I'm wrong on this, but I don't see how this doesn't escalate to a very bad place.

Fair point of fact, but I think its fair to be surprised the LAPD wasn't all in. (A sudden outbreak of blue flu and ICE calls sent straight to voice mail would have been nice but highly implausible.)

It's only logical to confess I was sceptical when the Strange New Worlds rumour mill started grinding, and only party soothed by Anson Mount serving legendary quiff realness in Disco.... Now, I'm just praying they don't have a warp core breech after two seasons of pretty much smashing it!

But seriously, my character flaws are legion but I hope pretentious hipster film snobbery is not among them! You see what you see, and you love what you love and that's the end of the affair.

Follow your heart - this is the house of no shame!

In the Hanks filmography, I have a fatal soft spot for the utterly bonkers, cosmically problematic epic hot mess than is CLOUD ATLAS. May the movie gods forgive me.
