Absolutely stunning performance from Lacey Turner tonight. And all live. British TV at its very best. But seriously, scriptwriters: give Stacey a break! #EELive #Eastenders40

Stupid and self-defeating. Trump probably thinks this is a tax cutting move. Sacking tax collecting staff just means you get more evasion and more avoidance, so you have to raise taxes just to get the same amount of money in. IRS (and UK HMRC) staff bring in many times their salaries in revenue.

Democracy in America seems to be slipping away. Who could have imagined democracy would prove more enduring in Europe than over there?

It's pretty obvious what Trump is doing. He wants to side with Putin. He's always wanted to side with Putin but couldn't say it out loud. So he's provoked a row with Zelenskyy so he can paint him as the bad guy and justify what he always wanted to do anyway. www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/...

My Trade Secrets today. If you’re against Trump’s tariffs you’d better hope that some combination of political opposition, smart diplomacy and an economic or market meltdown is going to stop him. Because neither domestic nor international courts are likely to stand in his way. on.ft.com/4hZ2KJv

Trump doesn't resolve conflicts. All he does is back the most powerful side and force the weaker side to capitulate. That isn’t negotiating, it’s bullying. Actually, it’s something worse than bullying that we don’t have a word for. ‘Trumping’ perhaps? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I agree with Duncan - from an economic perspective there is no meaningful difference between just meeting and just missing the fiscal rules. Tweaking tax/spending policy twice a year to chase the model is costly. Any remedial fiscal response could wait until the autumn. Three issues I can see 🧵

Presumably, the memo will now delete itself.

Libertarians backing Trump could be in for a nasty shock. Trump isn't interested in liberty, equality, free speech or anything like that. He's interested in power – getting it, using it and showing it off. Everything he's done and said so far points to a massive extension of executive power.

Wow. What a cover @politico.eu

There is no part of this article that isn’t outright evil or flatly horrifying

Watch out for Muskrat’s new mouthpiece, Nigel Farage, peddling for the NHS to be replaced. It’s coming

Goldman Sachs analysts : The money men saying the quiet part out loud Curing patients may not be a sufficiently profitable enterprise for biotech companies. Chronic disease is a far more beneficial business model www.cnbc.com/2018/04/11/g...

OFWAT says it has stopped water companies from paying bosses' bonuses out of customers' bills. So where does the money come from? #R4Today

The US president is now openly saying he wants to annex a neighbouring democratic country. This not normal, right?

#bhacry 0-2 !!! (32min)

Likely to be multiple reasons behind this 1. enhanced rates for strike cover 2. consultants doing waiting lists at weekends - probably v expensive. 3. high demand to cover rota gaps (some trusts only advertise these v late which may push up rates).

Problem with this stuff (again) is that officials' "appetite for risk" depends almost entirely on ministers' appetite for the same. Which past experience shows is something close to zero. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

OECD countries with the most homelessness

You can watch it here. Lovely stuff. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEOs...

The government is trying to drive #NHS performance by doubling down on the existing targets (most of which haven't been met for years). But are we still targeting the right things? Good piece from Siva Anandaciva on alternative approaches. www.kingsfund.org.uk/insight-and-...

Yes, I’ve often questioned whether official UK inflation figures give an accurate picture of the cost of living. They exclude housing costs (most people's biggest outgoing) and don't seem to give enough weight to 'everyday' stuff (which are proportionately more important during hard times).

Emotional this morning about the loss of Prescott. He hugely inspired my dad, who became a Labour councillor at the age of 50, after years as a bus driver. He gave permission to be in politics, while being your imperfect self, whatever your accent or background.

Just to be clear, this is exactly what the Kremlin wants prominent British political figures to be saying. Asking if this means we at war with a nuclear power is exactly the talking point the Kremlin wants in western countries.

I’m always interested in why some people think they should get special treatment and pay less tax than me: It’s people with kids at private school, because otherwise they would have to go to the same school as my kids. And farmers, because they get up early or something.

The protestors want to call it "the tractor tax" because calling it "the inheritance tax protest" would turn off public opinion. The tractors coming into London today, in fact, pay no road tax, no congestion charge, and no ULEZ. Exempt from all.

I would suggest that you don't need an external investigation to determine whether staff have to ask to use the loo or drink water

I don't think this breaches the manifesto commitment. If Labour promised a tax cut for working families, people wouldn't be satisfied if that turned out to mean lower NI for employers. Whether it's a good idea to raise the tax on jobs is another question. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024...

A lot of talk this morning about why the #NHS needs reform and why it's so difficult to do. I’ve heard literally nothing about what those reforms are.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? The NHS doesn’t have enough managers. It’s hard to plan strategically or spend money well without sufficient bureaucrats!

Elon Musk boosting outright Holocaust denial over on Twitter: Carlson's guest 'explains' that Germany never had plans for mass killings, they were just overwhelmed by millions of 'POWs and local political prisoners', and anyway the war was Churchill's fault.

#NHS GP funding is £112.50 per head. And you get face to face appointments (eventually) which BUPA won't do for that price. The private sector needs to be more efficient! www.pulsetoday.co.uk/news/practic...

If only there had been some kind of sign he was like this

Anyone else getting this message when they try to access a feed? It's not just this one, it's happening with most of feeds I look at (but not quite all). @support.bsky.team any thoughts?
