📣Taking our ability to understand phage biology up a notch. Phage functional genomics platform, out now 🔓Open access, read it at your leisure www.nature.com/articles/s41... @cresslab.bsky.social, @naturemicrobiol.bsky.social

Excited to share our new preprint on mutational scanning of the TnpB RNP! We identify several highly activating, single-position mutations in TnpB’s protein and reRNA. These datasets enabled us to engineer enhanced TnpB protein variants (>50x plant editing levels compared to WT).

CRISPRi-ART enables functional genomics of diverse bacteriophages using RNA-binding dCas13d | Nature Microbiology https://www.nature.com/articles/s41564-025-01935-7

we recently found some really neat RNA-guided DNA-cutting systems in phages. Despite remarkable similarities to CRISPR systems, including encoding guide RNAs in arrays, they appear entirely evolutionarily distinct (but definitely related to snoRNAs 🤓) We decided to call them TIGR-Tas systems 🐯

Huge work from @benadler.bsky.social et al @cresslab.bsky.social; Glad to be part of this super cool work.

It's kind of A Day as far as awful distracting things, but at least there is science!!!!

Today we report the directed evolution of HUH into rHUH, a sequence-specific covalent protein tag for RNA labeling. rHUH was hard to engineer: the initial HUH template had no RNA activity, so we started with RNA-DNA hybrids. 30 rounds of selection on the yeast surface were required, and 7 cycles of

A fun outing with the Rubin lab! @therubinlab.bsky.social

So happy to see this awesome work finally out in its final form! Congrats to Ben, Muntathar, and team!

Flashy words like "revolutionize" are thrown around quite liberally in our field. In this case though, I can't think of a more appropriate word. This stuff is 🔥🔥🔥.

Dive into our lab’s first peer-reviewed publication—co-led with our friends @benadler.bsky.social and Muntathar Al-Shimary from the @doudna lab! If you’ve already read the preprint, don’t miss the new updates: doi.org/10.1038/s415... @naturemicrobiol.bsky.social

Phage genomes are an pool of untapped potential that could be harnessed to create new genomic tools. IGI's @jenniferdoudna.bsky.social & Brady Cress @cresslab.bsky.social detail a new method for exploring phage genomes, out today in @naturemicrobiol.bsky.social. Read more: ow.ly/uucL50V77n0 🧪🧬🦠

It is finally out! Muntathar Al-Shimary, @doudna-lab.bsky.social , @cresslab.bsky.social and I present a gene knockdown tool that works in diverse bacteriophages: CRISPRi through antisense RNA Targeting (CRISPRi-ART)! Check it out @naturemicrobiol.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

East Bay Rep. Lateefah Simon and Los Angeles Rep. Ted Lieu recently paid a visit to the University of California, Berkeley’s Innovative Genomics Institute to hear about the importance of NIH-funded basic research. news.berkeley.edu/2025/02/24/d...

We were proud to host Reps. @replsimon.bsky.social and @reptedlieu.bsky.social for a tour of the IGI and discussions on the #BiomedicalResearch we're doing with the support of funding from NIH! Here's a great article on the visit from the @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social news room: bit.ly/4gWtlpD 🧪🧬

Grateful to @replsimon.bsky.social & @reptedlieu.bsky.social for visiting IGI to learn how federal funding is critical to supporting cutting-edge science & medicine, as well as training future generations. Cutting science funding affects real families across the US. Read here: shorturl.at/8cqRh

Glad to welcome Democratic Vice Chair @tedlieu.bsky.social to CA-12 today. We toured labs at @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social and discussed how the Trump administration's attacks on NIH funding endangers decades of leading research and scientific work.

Legitmately thrilled to share our latest work, in which @fernpizza.bsky.social solved an experimental challenge in plasmid biology as old as the field: measuring how plasmids compete and evolve within individual cells!

I'm so happy that I can finally share the results of my first postdoc paper with @baym.lol!!! Turns out plasmids are an amazing system to study multi-scale evolution and we can track within-cell and between-cell dynamics! (1/n) www.biorxiv.org/content/earl...
