Reminder that words matter. You can’t “deport” a US citizen. You might be kidnapping, disappearing, exiling, expelling, illegally removing, etc., but you’re not “deporting” a US citizen.

I'm not often a hands-waving, jumping-up-and-down person, but I do think this is an essential piece of news while this application remains pending at SCOTUS. The SG's position before the justices was significantly undermined by a declaration filed Wednesday in another case that was unsealed today.

A colleague emailed me today to flag the fact that the superb Fourth Circuit Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson ended a quotidian insurance opinion with an unusually introspective conclusion.

At this point, the way market investors keep reacting to Trump's senile freestyling about tariffs as if it reveals some reliable path back to normal times is more alarming than Trump's own instability

I think we should call these periodic thousand point rallies based on like one heterodox truth social post ‘flights to complacency.’

Just before 1 a.m., #SCOTUS stepped back into the Alien Enemy Act litigation with a (remarkable) ruling that suggests, among other things, that a majority of the justices is tiring of the Trump administration’s Calvinball. For more, see the latest “One First”: www.stevevladeck.com/p/144-the-su...

Scoop for @reuters.com: On Friday, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission will stop collecting data on injuries from incidents like car accidents and adverse drug effects due to staff cuts at the CDC. www.reuters.com/business/hea...

Thirty-eight of 43 experts cut last month from the boards that review the science and research that happens in laboratories at the National Institutes of Health are female, Black or Hispanic, according to an analysis by the chairs of a dozen of the boards.

America, and Americans, are at our best when we recognize that citizenship is a set of duties we owe to ourselves, each other, the nation, and past and future generations. We are at our worst when we see citizenship as merely a source of privileges and benefits to be jealously hoarded.

It’s been lost in the tariff news but the fact that the U.S. government can accuse you of a crime and send you to an El Salvadoran prison without trial, is legitimately scarier than the most hyperbolic claims of fascism made by the left during the election.

My latest scoop:

This is high art

Correct

Here’s what RFK Jr. has done since a measles outbreak began which has killed 3 people so far: 1. Buried a CDC report showing need for vaccination 2. Recommended vitamin A, resulting in liver damage in kids 3. Defunded vaccination clinics nationally 4. Hired a fraud to manipulate vaccine data

I mean, this is where you can really see the horror. Forget the legal question of what a judge can order. Sane, reasonable people who admit they've made a mistake work to fix it, all on their own, no judicial intervention necessary.

The “don’t worry he can’t do that” to “don’t worry he’ll never do that” to “nobody thought he would do that” to “don’t worry here’s why doing that is no big deal” pipeline.

our problem as people not infected by the authoritarian mind virus is that we are trying too hard to make sense of Trump’s tariffs as economic policy. Instead it is primarily symbolic, an attempt to reassert the fantasy of a racial colonial patriarchal family romance onto the world.

YOU GUYS.

It is really weird how all these people are saying this isn’t what they voted for when this is precisely what I voted against.

"We are fast approaching temperature levels – 1.5C, 2C, 3C – where insurers will no longer be able to offer coverage for many of these risks... The math breaks down: the premiums required exceed what people or companies can pay. This is already happening. Entire regions are becoming uninsurable.”

DEUTSCHE: “.. We are becoming increasingly concerned that the dollar is at risk of a broader confidence crisis. .. The safe haven properties of the dollar are being eroded and this is imposing a significant cost on unhedged dollar holdings.” 🇺🇸 @robinwigglesworth.ft.com www.ft.com/content/7664...

Listen, yeah maybe we might get into a world war or five and maybe everyone will get a disease that was almost eradicated years ago and maybe some people will die and maybe we will be poor unless we’re already rich, but the thing is i forgot where I was going with this.

Good thing people can eat, drink, wear, and drive white supremacy.

30 years ago a professor explained tariffs to me as “economic sanctions a country puts on itself” and that stuck with me.

One way to think of what’s going on is that Trump & his gang are trust fund kids spending down the reservoir of U.S. power & influence without understanding or caring where the balance in that account came from. They treat it as just a fact of nature that there will always plenty there.

We’re going to annex Canada and invade Greenland but we can’t request return of an innocent man from El Salvador.

The Trump DOJ argues in this case of mistaken deportation is that the *only* claim anyone can bring seeking the wrongfully deported person’s return from the black pit of a Salvadoran prison is a habeas petition that the court has no jurisdiction to hear. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Note the government is doing 2 separate things here: 1) Acknowledging it made a mistake (violated US law by deporting someone who was legally protected from deportation). 2) Refusing to fix the mistake by claiming it has no authority to do so.

@tmbg.bsky.social I found this in Dallas, maybe a Factory Showroom fan out there?

As I remember it, this wasn’t a significant part of the 2024 election. Congress has never held a vote on ending foreign aid, much less passed a bill. And the official responsible for eviscerating foreign aid and demolishing the agency that provided it was never confirmed to his made up position.

As of Friday, there have been 46 cases in which federal judges have blocked Trump policies. The rulings in those cases have come from 39 different judges appointed by 5 different presidents (of both parties) to 11 different district courts across 7 different circuits. Maybe it's not the judges?

Take the time to follow the link and read for yourself the list of cancelled grants. The combination of cruelty, shortsightedness, and absolute ignorance is astounding.
