@Nonilex many of the most heinous purveyors of insane racism and conspiracy theories on X make a good living from those eyeballs. a not insubstantial number of those accounts are just people in like india or whatever ragebaiting americans for the ad money. it's a completely fucked set of incentives.

@alfiekohn the craziest part of this story is the video of the #ICE agents shattering the car window and dragging a US citizen out of his truck by force

@GhostOnTheHalfShell matt levine's column: https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2023-07-14/ripple-is-a-security-and-it-isn-t
you can get around the paywall with archive.ph or whatever, but the subheader sums it up nicely:

@GhostOnTheHalfShell they're shady af - all their money comes from dumping tokens they "pre-mined" some time around 2015-ish. a lot of crypto people hate them (with good reason).
but that aside, it's the ripple vs. SEC ruling that IMHO will rank among the most damaging court rulings in the last […]

@GhostOnTheHalfShell ripple vs. SEC was the moment crypto started to come back from the dead after the FTXplosion. the judge's ruling was insane. matt levine did a great column about it but tl;dr the judge ruled that the securities laws are only meant to protect wall street investors and crypto […]

@Nonilex probably not a coincidence that Howard Lutnick and Justin Sun's money laundering crypto company #Tether recently acquired a large ownership stake in #Juventus...

@GhostOnTheHalfShell i think gift cards is probably the best analogy, and tbh i doubt the big responsible firms like walmart and amazon will abuse the system. i worry a lot more about the smaller operations and in particular i worry about the fact that the trump family now has its own stablecoin […]

@GhostOnTheHalfShell blackrock's mostly in the custody business - they just hold onto your bitcoins / stocks / whatever for you. there's not really any leverage so it's theoretically kind of impossible for them to blow up.
but of course they have facilitated most of the world's stock trading […]

@GhostOnTheHalfShell my hunch is that they saw the absurd fees Grayscale was making for their "closed" bitcoin ETF (GBTC) and decided to steal that business because the guys at grayscale are absolute clowns and it's a ton of money for doing absolutely nothing, and indeed when the blackrock […]

@GhostOnTheHalfShell larry fink changing his mind and embracing bitcoin to launch the bitcoin ETF (and getting the SEC to approve the idea of bitcoin ETFs) was the single most important event in terms of bringing crypto back to life after the FTXplosion.

@glyph love books could kill but just some food for thought here: they throw out that the US did great during covid by shoveling money out to everyone.
what no one ever seems to consider is that ~10% of those trillions of dollars went to fraud and another 8-14% went into the crypto industry […]
