No, just to the tops of their heads, like how you don't get to count your hair when they put the thing on your head at the doctor's.

One of the things I always tell folks when they want to dismiss seeing an eagle (given I'm in AK, frequent, lol) it's this: we almost lost eagles, along with so many other large raptors, to DDT. It's taken decades for them to come back. Every eagle you see is a reminder we can choose to do better.

Absolutely Tragic. Like visiting a grave. :(

Martha was a very special girl. Solid white, deaf as a post and personality made of marshmallow fluff. She started sucking on rosebuds of her own accord, very good for keeping the aphid population down. Also used to let my mom and aunt fingerpaint spots and stripes and other coat patterns onto her.

Yes, actually! I've always wanted to visit that part of the world.

"Let the dog to handle pests" is baked into my DNA. My mom let our dogs handle the rabbits and squirrels, my grandmother had a pit bull that sucked aphids off rosebuds, and my great-grandmother had a condor to keep the the constabulary at bay. All the yard work is a future job for Tod Howard The Fox

Next paycheck this is definitely going on my laptop

My mom had this exact problem while gestating me Her solution was to haul the garden hose up to her second-story window, set the head to "jet", and wait. When the bird lit off again, she rolled over, took aim, and POW! Blasted him right off the fence. He sang from the next city block thereafter.

Personally, I would be absolutely thrilled to do a "weird animal facts" panel with you guys because 1. You rock 2. I *NEED* to discuss the role of dopamine and serotonin in the domestication of dogs and how that means a cow is more likely to be killed by a corgi than a wolf, and not just by exposure

Here's everyone from what I'm calling the "Doghouse AU", arranged by relative height!

Its true of anything with teeth iirc. I wanted to mention bull/gopher snakes specifically because my neighbor got told "don't worry, they're not venomous" by her friends, so she didn't take her dog to the vet for a bite which turned septic.

That said, a word of caution: while non-venomous, they often carry nasty bacteria and are aggressive when cornered. If you or a pet are bitten, you need to get on antibiotics ASAP- my neighbors lost their dog to a septic bull snake bite because they didn't know.

So these guys are incidental ophiophages, but it's more accurate to say they'll eat anything they can swallow. They're not as prone to eating their own tails as king snakes are, but it does happen. These are GREAT to have in your yard: babies to adults make excellent garden pest control.

Looks like the consensus is 1. It's cool, but: 2. DEFINITELY include alt text (I have it set on mandatory) 3. Also include Link to Tumblr (I want screenshots as a sort of additional backup in case Tumblr dies of glitch)

I was doing this yesterday with the American Toads at the Denver Botanic Gardens LMAO. Sharing the thing you love is like 90% of the fun!

IIRC, it was that there was a ballerina whose stalker was murdering his potential rivals for her affection and the birder drama was the confusing B- plot. I love midsommer. Bonkers ass show.

Yeah! I knew someone would take her, but I was surprised someone came to collect her tonight!

IDK, "Benthic-Abyss Johnson" has a nice ring to it?

Protip: everyone I know who likes the locked tomb trilogy LOVES the band Ghost (skull Pope above is their lead singer). Highly recommend looking them up, you'll almost certainly enjoy them
