Running a Structural Biology and Protein Production group at a Boston biotech. Previously worked in rare disease, but focusing on drug discovery in precision oncology the last few years. Crystallography with a splash of CryoEM and NMR. Opinions are my own.

Science, research & public health face unprecedented attacks in the U.S. We stand with our American colleagues & support the Stand Up for Science call. Join the global march tomorrow, incl. in Paris! 🧪✊ 📍 March 7, 13:30 – Place Jussieu 🔗 More info: standupforscience.fr #StandUpForScience

I guess their constituents will just have to have those conversations when their representatives are skiing or out dining or anywhere else they show their faces in public.

Maybe the NOAA shouldn’t go through with their SpaceX contracts anymore? www.space.com/spacex-launc...

The long-term, multi-system complications after Covid hospitalization among ~64,000 cases and 310,000 matched controls. Excess of Type 2 diabetes, kidney, lung and neurological disorders. Replicates prior work by @zalaly.bsky.social and colleagues www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

It’s worth emphasizing that so much industry work - including my own research - depends heavily on academic innovation The US has a strong economy in part because we invest in the basic research. We destroy the bedrock of research on top of which industry is built, we stifle innovation [cont’d]

Okay, so. I don’t know how much of a heads up this is when it’s just a notice about these 2 mutations. Do they really raise serious concerns about “increased transmission?” Sort of. It’s more complex than D701N & E626K, omg pandemic bird flu. What do these mutations do in H5N1?

Great advice on transitioning from academia to industry. I would add that you should also be prepared to discuss why you applied to a specific company. Find details in their platform or targets to discuss. Interview teams see you as a flight liability if you’re just looking for any industry position

If you had mentally filed Stand Up for Science as "sometime in the future", please be aware that it's in a week and a half, so get your act together and figure out where the nearest one is happening. They are doing a massive organizational job on a very tight schedule.

Influenza A and norovirus levels in the Boston area are at their highest wastewater levels to date this season. Stay home if you’re sick and stop spreading this crap around if you can help it.

Kind of seems like the effects rippling out from this could strain US healthcare to its limits. From more rural hospitals and clinics closing, longer waits at ERs, and private insurances raising rates when hospitals raise prices due to having more uninsured patients. Well done US electorate.

Destroying the CDC team researching Lyme disease. Disbanding the HHS Long COVID council. Cutting Medicaid. How is any of this cost-saving? This is not about efficiency. It’s about funding tax breaks for billionaires while costing Americans their health. www.9news.com/article/news...

March 7th meetings and team 1:1s rescheduled, telling my team I’d be at the protest. Hoping they choose to join me. Now I gotta design some signs this weekend.

As biomedical research is strangled, pharma leaders have decided to bend the knee, you know, for the shareholders. Basic research is the foundation that drives industry drug discovery. Pharma is paying fealty just to knee cap itself when basic research has withered away. endpts.com/pfizer-ceo-s...

No, 150-year-olds aren't collecting Social Security benefits. Elon Musk claims to have found rampant fraud; but there's a much simpler explanation.

I have been getting a surprising number of questions about CIA's low-confidence announcement that they believe SARS-CoV-2 came from a lab. A few comments in 🧵, but to summarize: 1️⃣ No new intelligence 2️⃣ No new report 3️⃣ No evidence exist to support SARS-CoV-2 came from lab 4️⃣ Usual nonsense More 👇

I have been talking to the media, Time, Fortune, NBC, etc., to explain how the onslaught on science and NIH will impact the health of all Americans. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, heart disease, or depression. Spread the word about how cutting science impacts all. time.com/7216299/nih-...

Heterologous protein over-expression in E. coli is now woke because of 'inclusion bodies'

Total NIH funding cuts by state. This can be helpful when talking to your representatives www.datawrapper.de/_/Y0Pnk/

Another assault on US competitiveness at a time when biomedicine is roaring with innovation, an own-goal in a high-stakes international tournament. Of course the real losers are American people needing medicines and cures. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

Just received this photo from a friend of a warehouse in Kinshasa. These are tuberculosis medications--ALREADY PAID FOR--that aren't being distributed due to the Trump Administration's stop work order. TB treatment is being interrupted in SO many patients around the world. What does that mean? (1/2)

Really trying to speed run the destruction of science in this country. Hopeful institutions and elected officials can fight this. And since biotech/pharma aren’t in the business of basic research, hoping leaders and investors are pulling strings in the background to push back.

Outside of USAID headquarters, Senator Brian Schatz: "If you want to change an agency, introduce a bill and pass a law. You cannot wave away an agency that you don't like or that you disagree with by executive order, or by literally storming into the building and taking over the servers." BOOM!

New satellite waste accumulation area is this dork’s front lawn.

Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

Figured it was a good day to donate to Wikipedia in light of data being removed from government websites. Small acts of resistance add up quickly on the population level.

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

Been planning vacation a little differently this year. Looking to spend time in biotech/pharma locations outside the US to scout areas to possibly permanently relocate to. Would love some recommendations of areas to visit, especially in the EU (Blue Card).

Here's @gorskon.bsky.social on Vinay Prasad's adulation of the changes at the NIH. "Tell me you’ve never been awarded an NIH grant before without telling me you’ve never been awarded an NIH grant before." sciencebasedmedicine.org/the-attack-o...

"Health disparities research" is a field of study where researchers look at how things like race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status can influence health outcomes. Now any gov't website about this says "page not found". This is a dystopia that I did not imagine that we'd be living through.
