Actually, same kid -- when 6 or so, saw a copy of "Animal Farm" at a friend's house and thought, "I like animals!"
When she came home I told her the book was really about communism, and she looked at me very seriously and said, "No, mom. It's about pigs."

There is a world of difference between steering kids towards books you think they'll enjoy and can handle, and prohibiting reading. And they can definitely tell the difference.
