on two excellent ProPublica investigations and the larger problem of credulous police pseudocience open.substack.com/pub/thepunit...

Comments on this are interesting. People feel Trump should not face consequences for obvious fraud, and the arguments for unequal application of the law all admit that he broke the law in the first place. Seeing Trump face consequences is intolerable for narcissists www.wsj.com/articles/tru...

Some thoughts on the 'loneliness epidemic' - we're doomscrolling alone more and more on social media platforms like tiktok (or this, or the Bad Place) but the platforms are not the cause. People will be engaged with a functioanl society. open.substack.com/pub/thepunit...

We have an epidemic of judicial corruption and dishonesty in the US and it poses a serious obstacle to meaningful criminal justice reform. This was written from a place of anger and might overclaim but I believe in the core argument here thepunitiveappetite.substack.com/p/the-moral-...

The cops in the US operate as an armed robbery syndicate thepunitiveappetite.substack.com/p/the-united...

On the historical politics of violence and Hamas's control of the Gaza Strip - too much American commentary on the crisis in Israel ignores the political economy of terrorism in establishing control thepunitiveappetite.substack.com/p/past-prese...

a shame of Jersey City, because really, the cops should mellow out a bit.

An actual IDF major who is going to fight writes in the NYT about Israeli right-wing leadership's culpability for this mess, and Americans across the internet are posting about how every Palestinian is an enemy combatant and should be killed. www.nytimes.com/2023/10/13/o...

The President of Israel is making the same argument Hamas does: everyone residing in our enemy's territory is in some way culpable for allowing the enemy to exist there and thus they are all fair targets.

This feels somewhat meaningless and empty to say and no one will read it, but american commentators talking about how Israel didn't ask the US to de-escalate after 9/11 are living in a fantasy where those wars could somehow still be justified. we *should* have! it was a mistake that U allies didn't

Target's story that shoplifting forces the closure of stores doesn't make much sense in light of retail data and store specifics, and in all likelihood is cover for a combination of mismanagement and political goals thepunitiveappetite.substack.com/p/target-har...

"What are the ethical considerations of flaying?" all time great FAQ pages

I really think that finance capital has eroded our social connections to each other in a deep way. I also think it's responsible in that sense for some of the social dysfunction (e.g. our intense punitiveness, carceralness) we see. pt 1: shorturl.at/osEGQ pt 2 shorturl.at/aoxV7

going to start posting stuff on here with a bang. The prosecution case against Lucy Letby is bizarrely weak, and it looks like a recipe for another false killer nurse case built on hype. thepunitiveappetite.substack.com/p/did-lucy-l...
