If we’re all going to die I might as well say it: the LOTR books are turgid garbage. And the movies! With their schlock and melodrama and inexplicable cinematography, they’re somehow even worse. I’ve never understood an American cultural phenomenon less, including, like, Crazy Frog and JNCO Jeans.

Every argument for "AI computation lacks these (ill-defined) qualia, therefore AIs are not sentient" is a landmine waiting to be stepped on by society when someone notices some other humans they dislike lack those qualia (b/c those qualia don't precisely exist) and decides they are subsentient NPCs.
