The difference between the thinking of humans and of existing AIs is in part one of kind, but it is now mostly one of degree.
Magical thinking about what makes humans human is liable to be turned around to redefine other humans as subhuman, because of how incoherent and malleable it all is.

It’d be great if the weird religious extremists that run the United States and Iran right now would *both* step aside.

Brad Lander knows ICE is a bunch of fascist thugs with poor impulse control. And he is happy to provide them the opportunity to demonstrate it live on camera. He is putting his physical safety on the line to do so and we should all appreciate that.

probably my most prominent one: outside of a few select and sparing applications — dried fruit in tagines, orange sauces, etc. — sweet fruits do not belong in savory foods. if there is a fresh grape or god forbid a strawberry it is no longer a salad but something else, something obscene, profane

in retrospect, it was kinda weird to establish a social norm of sneering at the idea of low-cost rewards for good behavior

EVE Online is a good one for this. I have friends I made ~15 years ago in that game I'm still in touch with.
It's also never too late to get started. I don't play EVE any more but the community is extremely welcoming to newcomers, contrary to popular belief.

and a lot of the dread and fear that sometimes creeps back into my day to day awareness and can be easily attributed, and used to be, in daily life, to things like "capitalism" or "the world is getting worse and worse,"is really "someone from my past who really got in my head might not approve of me"

If you can't spell "conscience" I don't think I'm inclined to listen to your opinions on literature.

Mask doesn’t mean “face covering,” it means “face covering I approve of” which in Taylor Lorenz’s case means “face covering which must be worn at all times except a book release event if somebody else is holding it for you.”

My takeaways from LLMs are closer to "humans aren't special" than "we can build robot slaves with a clean conscience" tbh.

That's a pretty big if. And a huge leap from a chess engine to what we think of as AGI.

Anyway - that's what could happen before modern medicine + contraception and all the other things! You modern person, you would not want to live in the past. It was bad!
