I mostly do music. But, as sound doesn't move in a vacuum, I read, think, and write about other things as well.

Thanks for the sitrep! It's helpful for folks watching from afar, who don't always know the local dynamics.

She is in the current, 2026, senate class. (And oddly, outlets that track projected race outcomes, like 270towin, seem to think that seat is secure.) So if there were ever a time to capitalize on a bonehead comment, now would be it. I hope any challengers are watching. . .

The picture worth 1000 words though, right? ;)

Indeed, thank you! As you saw, I got the memo from the excellent @sailorrooscout.bsky.social who always has great info on vax research and related. . . This awful proposal would remove my access--bad for me; worse for my family. As my own posts are few and scarcely seen, I shamelessly reply-bomb.
comment in response to post
No kidding! And just 3 days left to submit comments on the proposal (which can be anonymous, if folks want). I've read a few; plenty of anti-vax folks writing in to demand complete removal, so sending even a basic "vaccines are for everyone" helps! LINK: www.regulations.gov/commenton/FD...

Public comments are open for a whopping 3 more days(!) Here's the link: www.regulations.gov/commenton/FD... No need to select a category. Comments can be anonymous if you want. Takes less than a minute to send a statement that vaccines should be available to everyone. Keep spreading the word!

Yeah that headline is something special. Seems to be an increasing trend for headlines to tell a different story than the articles do, as well.

I would be *so very alarmed* to receive a text like that.

As @scalzi.com has said, "the failure mode of clever is asshole." Congrats to these members on their excellent demonstration of the principle?

If you live in Glenarden, Cheverly, Mount Rainier, New Carrollton, Riverdale Park, Brentwood, University Park, Hyattsville, or Westminster, your city elections are REAL SOON and you hopefully already know about them! You can easily find upcoming election info for any state at vote411.org. 3/end

In the next six weeks, there are nearly a dozen elections in Maryland jurisdictions alone: besides the upcoming June 3 special to fill Senator Alsobrooks' former seat as Prince George's County Executive (and a vacant council seat too!) there are TEN municipal elections in the first half of May. 2/

Without diminishing the accuracy or weight of anything you've said here, this was still my very first thought: www.youtube.com/clip/UgkxOCLyexv4R71SziLdNVTX-7EGjNVgKbtR?feature=shared (The House of Peers, in "Iolanthe")

Jackie did a post on this at Rocker Skating; also an IG video but I don't have IG so couldn't watch all of it. Post mentions host spots, and part of the vid that I did see mentioned athletes qualifying just for team event (at Beijing). . . Could either of these scenarios be spot #30?
comment in response to post
I think #30 is the spot that will be qualified at the Beijing qualifying event?

An A+ Granddad story for sure. When I was in 3rd grade, we had granddads who'd visit our classrooms to talk about the numbers tattooed on their arms, which was a whole different experience of that story type, for a whole different audience. Your granddad telling you was an absolute cut above.

I'm pretty sure "Put Your Big Toe. . ." first appeared on a Rob Wasserman album (Trios) in the earlyish '90s. It was probably teenage-me's intro to Elvis Costello, other than vague awareness of "Alison." I hear ya on mood of the day. Weird how there's a lot of fitting music -- or maybe not ;-)
comment in response to post
And here my go-to Elvis Costello tune has always been "Put Your Big Toe In The Milk Of Human Kindness." Can't ever say he's got no range. . .

That it would be *far better* for our electeds to actually run interference on the things we can only protest seems regarded as too much to ask. I'll ask it anyway, but abdicating their efficacy to lawsuits and popular protest seems to be the preferred course of Senate Dems right now.
comment in response to post
Oh *absolutely* -- and when I make daily calls (just like they phone in their jobs?) to ask why they don't lose more slowly, and staffers tell me about the rally/protest/photo-ops the Senators attend, I remind them that we take off work to be there, but it's a small part of their job to show up.
comment in response to post
You said it. On the other hand, if I thought staging a flash mob outside my Senator's office to the tune of "Holding Out For A Hero" would help, I would definitely move heaven to make it happen. But my energy seems better spent on mutual aid work by now.

Not the first time one of your posts has reminded me of the "Outside Context Problem" (as described by Iain M Banks). But, in this case, some folks did see it coming.
comment in response to post
I'd say you've identified their thinking exactly.

I mean, there's maybe a place for that evaluative approach but I feel strongly that this is not it.

Doesn't that turn of phrase bring back memories

Man I remember having cspan on in highschool when I was working on 3-voice counterpoint homework. The endless quorum calls were soothing background. When did that go out of fashion? (Unspeakable nerd, I know.)
comment in response to post
I mean, we all know the outcome when it gets to the party line vote. Why are they not willing to "lose more slowly"?
comment in response to post
If they really wanted to "not roll over" there are plenty of plays Dems could make. They're leaving points on the table because either they're too lazy or too scared to play real defense. Not sure which option I like less.
comment in response to post
I mean, is it even a "delay" if no one manages to stretch it past 30 hrs? If the guy gets voted in on party line tomorrow night, what's the difference (except Dems can try to claim points for their all-night poetry slam)?

My Senator's staffer told me when I called that "The Senator worked all weekend" . . . but since he didn't work on slowing Vought's or Gabbard's or RFKJr's confirmations, nor remove Musk's mini-minions from agencies they've occupied and shut down, not sure he did anything others couldn't have.

Attended an info/organizing call on immigrant advocacy earlier that was 1)organized, 2)actionable, and 3)BRIEF. Hand to god its like as soon as people forget how to use punk-rock methods they ossify into . . . whatever we're calling Senate Dems right now.
comment in response to post
Spoke with a VanHollen staffer today to ask for specifics; got the usual "Senator is working hard" attending rallies and protests -- photo ops that I reminded her are part of his job, but that we voters take time out of work to show up for. "Passing the word" seems worth little if no one listens.
comment in response to post
Call ended, with "my door is always open" and "let's all keep in touch" (and 1 more reference to "fighting RFK Jr tonight.") Too bad I couldn't ask about delaying the vote tomorrow! Lots of fed workers here, so Q/A focus heavy on furloughs and effects of funding loss. Fair enough, but still. . .
comment in response to post
Haha, I'm in the queue, but they'll never get to me I'm sure. (If they do I'll report how it goes.)
comment in response to post
I'm listening to a call with both my state's Dem Senators. Lots of range in the questions being asked; lots of answers about lawsuits and how GOP has "historically" (or in Trump 1.0) attacked the issue in question. Nothing about what they're doing on the floor -- except for tonight's theater.

You can definitely get hooked up or more involved with ppl & groups in your *local community* and help build the network to keep each other safe. Immigrant assistance? LGBTQ safety? Repro healthcare? Someone's prob already working on this wherever you live. I bet they'd welcome more help!
