Stumbled upon a great panel today @peoplesbooktakoma.com on racism and the prison system with Dr. Kris Marsh of UMD, Dr. Brittany Friedman @curlyprofessor.bsky.social, and Pulitzer Prize winner Toluse Olorunnipa while we were out feeling sad and buying more books to make us feel a little better.

TODAY!

Mass #surveillance in the US has historically targeted racial and ethnic minorities. Experts warn this pattern could intensify under a second Trump term, with a focus on people of color and immigrants. @curlyprofessor.bsky.social @raqueldelerme.bsky.social @usc.edu #deportation

Thank you 🙏🏼 Girl Talk HQ for interviewing me about Carceral Apartheid @uncpress.bsky.social & writing up a feature on my book and the Black feminist intellectual tradition! www.girltalkhq.com/new-book-on-...

It honestly feels a bit silly to post about research right now. But I refuse to accept the premise that the precious, dreadful, complex stories with which I was entrusted should not be heard. My latest from @sfjournal.bsky.social : academic.oup.com/sf/advance-a...

Our new article (w/ April Fernandes & Gabriela Kirk-Werner) introduces the theoretical concept “Civil Lawfare” connecting the war on drugs, crime, and poverty to the weaponization of the civil legal system against disenfranchised communities. academic.oup.com/socpro/advan...

"Suppressing resistance has a long history, and 'Carceral Apartheid: How Lies and White Supremacy Run Our Prisons' traces the explosive growth of Black imprisonment since Reconstruction."—read a review of @curlyprofessor.bsky.social Brittany Friedman's recently released book via #TheIndypendent:

About to be live on The Conversation w/ Al McFarlane @blackpressusa.bsky.social and look forward to this important conversation about what carceral apartheid means for the fight for justice in prisons, and our communities.

Thank you to Eleanor Bader for this amazing review of my book CARCERAL APARTHEID for The Indypendent. indypendent.org/2025/01/new-...

10,000 people are currently marching in Los Angeles. Good, we need this everywhere.

@msmagazine.com “January 2025 Reads for the Rest of Us” featuring CARCERAL APARTHEID is just the pick-me-up I needed. Appreciate the recognition of my book, its Black feminist origins, and all the trials and tribulations overcome across a decade to write it. msmagazine.com/2025/01/31/b...

I screamed when @sonyabonczek.bsky.social told me! 🥹

ICYMI: @msmagazine.com January 2025 Reads for the Rest of Us, featuring AN EFFICIENT WOMANHOOD by Natanya Duncan, CARCERAL APARTHEID by @curlyprofessor.bsky.social, FIGHTING FOR CONTROL by @drlmmurillo.bsky.social, and THANKS FOR LIFE by Ericka Verba ⬇️

This was a phenomenal start to my book tour. Such inspiring questions from @deray.bsky.social & wonderful engagement by the audience at Politics & Prose. I’m so grateful. Amazing way to start this tour! Thank you 🙏🏼

Such a treat to attend @curlyprofessor.bsky.social’s talk on her new book “Carceral Apartheid” at Politics and Prose this afternoon. I appreciate her ending on an “invitation to awakening.” Anyone interested in prisons and PIC abolition should absolutely check it out.

We’re here! Getting started in 30 mins. Politics & Prose will also be live-streaming at 3pm EST from their YouTube ❤️

I heard about this work in its early phases and am excited to see it in print.

Despite everything, I’m very happy to embark on a national and international book tour for CARCERAL APARTHEID, beginning today at Politics & Prose in DC, with stops in Chicago, NYC, Philly, LA Times Festival of Book, and Barcelona, and London - all on my website- w/ more coming. Kicking off today:

There is so much extraction in academia, built into its history and fabric, that theft is an institutional routine. And people wonder why faculty of color organize themselves or are distrustful.

January has definitely felt like one long year for us in LA and I was happy to celebrate my book and then realized no, I have to fight some misogynoir nonsense. I refuse to let this ridiculousness stop my joy or celebrating my book.

Thank you to Black Studies and Black Twitter for holding this extractive white scholar accountable. Reposting to Blue Sky since he’s hiding over here.
