Trump is claiming his strikes on Iran made the American people safer. He is dangerously wrong. I served two combat tours in Iraq and am now on the Armed Services Committee. His actions were not only unconstitutional, they have made America less safe – not more. Here’s why: 🧵

“He has always worked hard to put food on the table for us and my mom,” said Alejandro. “He was always careful and always did his taxes on time. He never caused any problems and he is known as a kind and helping person by everyone in our community.” santanero.org/2025/06/21/l...

And that’s a wrap for Historians at the movies this week! Thanks everybody for coming out to make it a great night. Stay tuned for next weeks announcement, and remember, #HATM is a community. A family. Take care each other out there. (I had to sneak red guardian in here somehow.)

They’re going to try to make you feel insane for opposing this war. They’ll ignore protests and downplay any opposition. They’ll try to strongarm you into submission. They did it with Iraq and they’ll do it again. And then a few years later they’ll pretend they were with you all along.

I’ve made the case that presidents don’t need congressional approval for certain kinds of Article II military actions. I don’t think Trump can make that case here, but Johnson arguing that the threat was so imminent that Congress literally had no time to vote is just silly.

"Why are you guys so anti-dictators? Imagine if America was a dictatorship. You could let 1% of the people have all the nation's wealth. You could help your rich friends get richer by cutting their taxes. And bailing them out when they gamble and lose." 1/

This is exactly what the issue was. Trump could not handle an agreement made by another president. Thing is, it was Trump’s withdrawal that culminated in yesterday’s bombing. Ineptitude at its finest.

This is absolutely insane shit to write down and publish. The left scared her. This might beat allll the other NYT headlines. Truly spectacular. The GOP banned abortion, the GOP said they would prosecute doctors providing abortions, the 6 Republican appointed SCOTUS judges overturned Roe.

👇🎯 And the current guys are doing this because the last guys faced absolutely no consequences for that. Because we are a society & polity that completely fails at elite accountability, over & over again, all the way back to at least 1865. As it turns out, people respond to incentives.

Watching so many Democrats wave away sexual harassment allegations against Cuomo—after spending years watching Republicans wave away rape and sexual assault allegations against Trump—is depressing. Saying that serious allegations of sexual abuse don't matter is morally repugnant.

There are journalists who had decades-long careers and the only time we mentioned their names in FAULT LINES was to quote their gullible cheerleading for the war in Iraq. Looks like a new generation is lining up to be memorialized in the same way. Your kids will be so proud!

Since Me Too men have loved to explain to me that “there’s a difference” between types of sexual misconduct, that harassment is different from assault is different from rape. I know these differences. It’s just that women judge them to assess our safety and men judge to assuage their conscience.

If people really find this to be such an easy conclusion, then Congressional authority should be easy to get. So why don’t they insist on a vote? They know this isn’t “progressive” resistance. They want to marginalize it as such because on top of this war being ILLEGAL, it’s also deeply unpopular.

Trump got maneuvered by Bibi into arbitrarily attacking Iran while they were engaging in talks, with no evidence they are actively developing a bomb, after changing his mind several times, without consulting Congress. But GOP lawmakers praised his "decisiveness."

Not enough reporting on the fact that Trump created the "problem" that bombing Iran was intended to "solve." He pulled out of the 2015 nuclear agreement for no other reason than Kerry/Obama negotiated it. This war has been in the works since 2018 and Trump is it's author.

No one wants to hear that <checks notes> Iran currently has a more active & functional parliament than the United States of Just This One Guy Can Do Whatever He Wants Because No One In Congress Who Swore Oaths Will Do Their Damn Jobs

Excited for this screenshot to be used to blame feminism for the war.

During the war monger Trump’s speech last night I was reminded of a long interview I had with David Halberstam in 2005 I asked him if he had a pet peeve. He said this:

step 1: start a foreign war step 2: accuse internal opponents of collaborating with foreign enemy step 3: officially categorize internal opponents as formal enemies of the state

Meet the Press inviting JD Vance *and* Lindsey Graham on the air to sell the war should finally cement NBC’s role as a propaganda division of the Trump administration

We're only half a year in, but is there any contest about worst VP in modern US history? (Exempting pre-Civil War Aaron Burr, John C Calhoun, Andrew Johnson.) Agnew was a crook but not such a toady. Quayle was way more substantive (and less grand-standing) than Vance.

'Stop the tragedy of war,' pope says after US joins war against Iran

✋ Former US government War Power lawyer here. The War Powers Resolution does not/not provide any additional authority to use military force. The Article II arguments for using force against Iran are entirely bogus. As are any claims that either the 2001 or 2002 AUMFs authorize this attack.

We are now in the infamous "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" swaggering stage of successfully provoking a country in the Middle East to want to kill Americans.

Still my biggest question aside from Iranian retaliation. What is the diplomatic plan?

no accidents

EXCLUSIVE — The Onion has a full-page ad in today’s NYT featuring part of an editorial calling out congressional fecklessness towards Trump. They also sent a copy of their latest issue to every lawmaker. My report, with an excerpt from the full editorial: www.thehandbasket.co/p/exclusive-...

Netanyahu has spent the better part of two decades trying to strong arm the United States into an unprovoked war against Iran and finally found a president stupid enough to do it for him. Unbelievable.

really great how swiftly Trump & co have made the U.S. a shithole country that can't even suspend the routine for five minutes for international visitors, like plenty of repressive regimes are able to pull off all the time

This really isn’t a hard message. Obama neutralized the Iran nuclear program through the hard work of diplomacy, but Trump tore up the deal in his first term out of spite and chose war instead.

WAPO: Trump, thinking that the independent Nuclear Regulatory Commission is too cautious about safety and insufficiently concerned with profits, is moving to strip the Commission of regulatory oversight of nuclear power plants. Because profit is more important than citizen and environmental safety.

@edwardluce.bsky.social very much to the point:

Trump dismantled diplomacy, gutted the national security apparatus & pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal, decisions that helped destabilize the region. Now, it’s all bravado & this attack on Iran is likely to lead to a protracted conflict. This is provocation through chaos. This isn’t a “win”.

MSM outlets dusting off those capes. They love a war—lots of big boom footage, breathless speculation, grey-haired experts intoning, fancy maps, a chance to claim they’re patriots. Real journalism right now will explain the risks, ignore the braggadocio, and try to get to the facts.

Trump said he would end wars. Tonight, he dragged us into one. His decision violates the Constitution, endangers American lives and risks unleashing dangerous forces we can’t control. My full statement:

The American evangelical right is absolutely shitting themselves with excitement over this. There is nothing on planet earth that they want more then a destabilized Middle East at war to trigger the rapture. This is 100% fact even though it sounds ridiculous.

AOC: “It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.”

Calling Trump starting a war a “distraction” makes that word meaningless. It’s the whole story, he flails any way he can to feel any sense of control and dominance. And he doesn’t care who he gets killed. And millions could die because he tore up a peace deal because he didn’t make it.
