Meanwhile the reporters doing good work, like @lorak.bsky.social, @danahull.bsky.social, and others have been harassed and yelled at, just for doing their jobs well.

On May 8, NHTSA sent Tesla another letter, this time asking about its planned Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. NHTSA asks how the robotaxis will safely operate in “reduced roadway visibility conditions, such as sun glare, fog, airborne dust, rain, or snow.”

Johna was 71. She had taken her grandchildren to school that morning.

Johna puts on a safety vest and is standing by their Toyota 4Runner. The Tesla Model Y hits her straight on.

Howard and Johna try to help. Howard stands on the shoulder waving what appears to be a reflective safety vest.

The sun was setting in Arizona. There's a fender bender between two cars and that's blocking the left lane. The glare is really bad and approaching drivers are struggling to see, braking, merging right. Sarah Story, her mother Johna, and their colleague Brian Howard pulled over.

In late March, after I paid, I was emailed a link to evidence and downloaded massive files. Over 250 photographs taken by first responders at the crash scene, and 5 video files. Four of them were from the cameras on the Model Y. Another was from the dash cam of another car that witnessed the crash

Getting public records takes time. The election happened, then inauguration, DOGE, a trade war. In March I got some email and invoice saying I needed to pay for the records via a money order or cashiers check so I had to go to the post office and mail it in and then wait again.

My brain immediately went to: wait, a PEDESTRIAN? What exactly happened here? The fatal crash happened in in Rimrock, Arizona. So I made a bunch of phone calls and filed a public records act request with the Arizona Department of Public Safety. I asked for the full crash report, photographs, video

I hate that you are going through this but love that you are writing about it--the big feelings and the small details. Thank your for sharing. Years back, my therapist made a point that the depth of my grief matched the depth of my love. I think there's a big truth in that.
