A very nice walk on the canal, from Chalford, Trend Setters... Saw (little??) egret, some buzzards, and a dipper or two... ☺️ Top lunch at Stroud Brewery after, mind... In the company of the Hairy Genius, obviously...

Saturday morning's least surprising news, ever... “It was that year that our Office recruited 40-year-old businessman from the United States, Donald Trump, under the pseudonym ‘Krasnov'." bylinetimes.com/2025/02/21/d...

"‘A huge day out’: Lachlan Morton makes history with 648km Auckland to Wellington ride in less than a day. Australian cyclist’s day began at 4.09am in Auckland, New Zealand, and ended 18-and-a-half hours later in Wellington." www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/f...

Totally logical thing to do, obviously... #FuckSake "Outcry as Trump withdraws support for research that mentions ‘climate’. US government stripping funds from domestic and overseas research amid warnings for health and public safety." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

It'll be interesting to see the detail on this... "The seventh carbon budget, which will be published on Wednesday, is the latest in a series stretching back to 2008." "Recommendations will influence plans for energy, housing, transport industry and farming." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

"Historic England acquires collection featuring some of UK’s oldest photos. Janette Rosing built up pioneering trove of 8,000 images dating back to the early days of the Industrial Revolution." www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

Thursday morning's least surprising news, ever... 😬🥵 "Two-thirds of the Earth’s surface experienced record heat in 2024. In oceans and on land, from the north to the south pole, records were smashed for the monthly average temperature." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

There are some jaw dropping, scary numbers here... 😬 "Melting glaciers caused almost 2cm of sea level rise this century, study reveals. Decades-long research shows world’s glaciers collectively lost 6.542tn tonnes of ice between 2000 and 2023." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Well, it's not like it's important, or anything, is it?? 😬 "HSBC net zero goal delayed 20 years, as CEO offered 600% bonus. Bank moves climate targets from 2030 to 2050 and waters down environmental goals in plan for Georges Elhedery." www.theguardian.com/business/202...

"‘We’re projecting into the future’: sounds of BBC Radiophonic Workshop made available for public use. Software goes on sale that replicates the distinctive analogue sounds of celebrated unit where Doctor Who theme was created." www.theguardian.com/music/2025/f...

1. A few years ago, people like me were widely attacked in the media for “declinism”. How could we fail to see that we were heading into a capitalist utopia, in which everything would keep getting better? This is a thread about what we could see that our critics could not. 🧵

To paraphrase Homer Simpson "Some of the most shameful comments uttered by a president in my lifetime SO FAR" - there's, sadly, always tomorrow, or later today, or...

If anyone's in the area, avoid Cheltenham Road, Longlevens - we're up to five sets of temporary traffic lights now... It's not good...

Due to the layoffs I am afraid that we have had to take over the running of the US National Parks. We are updating the park regulations but for now the most important thing people can do before visiting a national park is to marinade themselves for 12 hours in olive oil, lime juice & garlic.

"Anti-migrant politics will not build a single house, staff a single hospital or raise anyone’s wages. Instead, by echoing its rhetoric, the government is simply fuelling the rise of Reform UK" Well done to these Labour MPs, trade unionists, and members. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

So, this sounds depressing & repellant!! But - where are the socialist, or simply centrist, events countering this absolute garbage?? "Event co-founded by Jordan Peterson will bring together global rightwing figures including senior US Republicans." www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

This is a great read from @chrischirp.bsky.social - with one of the best, and most depressing, Venn diagrams I've ever seen!! "So this is how liberty dies… " Making sense of Trump's first three weeks. substack.com/home/post/p-...
