That is the fog of war!

This is a short demo of Table Slayer - a tool I am building with @davesnider.com for creating virtual battle maps for table top games like Dungeons and Dragons. Join the waitlist to be a part of the beta (ETA March 2025) tableslayer.com

All of the map layers are rendered using an orthographic camera. But I wanted the weather to have some depth to it, so I render to a separate render target using a perspective camera. From there I can tune the camera's FOV to get the desired amount of "depth".

(3/4) Features include support for square and hex grids, dynamic weather options (snow, rain, falling leaves, etc.), fog, mood lighting, and much more. The focus is on creating a beautiful, easy-to-use experience that doesn't overwhelm the DM or players with a sea of options.

(2/4) In the video, the DM view is shown on the left and the Player view on the right, running in separate browser windows. The DM selects an active scene to broadcast to the players while making edits in real-time to the fog of war.

Ultimately, the data will tell the story…

There’s also a lot of “fluff” when you watch every line being coded. I’d rather see the essential parts of the solution explained, then have a link to the full source code. I will be attempting to address both of these things in my next video. I would love feedback from anyone on which they prefer!

My retention metrics support this, since most videos are between 5-10% retention by 5 minutes in, which is pretty terrible 📉

I always felt watching someone code in real-time is not a very efficient use of the viewer’s time since they spend 50% of the video waiting for the developer to type out the next line.

I don’t do WebXR personally but that’s an awesome idea! Maybe someone in the community can port this.

I don’t have much experience with it myself, but trying to put out more tutorials on it. I’m using Threlte in a more complex contract project, which has a similar feel but way less features. I feel R3F’s libraries really set it apart and make the dev experience great.

Thanks Simon! I think this project has made me a convert for R3F 😁
