This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

Donald Trump is ending the national database of police misconduct

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

The gene therapy Zolgensma helped children born with spinal muscular atrophy grow up to run and play. But the cost was stunning: $2M per dose. While taxpayers and small charities funded the drug’s early development, executives, venture-capital backers and a pharma giant have reaped the profits.

NEW: DOGE is behind the abrupt cancellation of $900 million in contracts overseen by the Institute of Education Sciences, a Department of Education division responsible for much of what we know about the state of U.S. schools. By @jodiscohen.bsky.social & @jsmithrichards.bsky.social

MAN

Democrats are waiting until they can get back in power and then pass a law saying "you must obey the law"

JUST IN: Judge Lamberth has blocked the Trump administration from enforcing provisions of Trump executive order that would require moving transgender inmates from women's to men's prisons. ecf.dcd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show...

Hospitals that are cutting off care to trans people under nineteen are the very definition of "complying in advance"—some, as I report in this story, even claiming, incorrectly, that Trump has "prohibited" gender-affirming care. He has not. They are caving. More here: newrepublic.com/article/1910...

Institutions that can sustain a body blow now is your time to step up

It’s exhausting to watch poll-tested, donor-beholden Congressional Democrats continue to be too old, too cloistered, and too bumbling to do anything as the government burns.

The desire to shrink groups down to spaces of easy agreement isn’t conducive to movement building. If we can’t organize beyond the bounds of our comfort zones, we will never build movements large enough to combat the forces that would destroy us. @prisonculture.bsky.social @mskellymhayes.bsky.social

Blame the voters here if you'd like, but this is also what happens when you forfeit the immigration debate by implying Trump is right but insufficiently committed rather than actually underscoring differences for the electorate.

Elon Musk keeps talking about saving taxpayers a few billion and government efficiency but the simplest and most efficient way for the government to recoup hundreds of billions all at once is to just take it from Elon Musk.

It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives

BERNIE SANDERS: Vaccines do not cause autism. Do you agree? RFK Jr: As I said, I'm not going into HHS with any preordained-- SANDERS: I asked you a simple question, Bobby RFK Jr: If you show me those studies ... SANDERS: That is a very troubling response

headlines from a week ago as an incident near DCA appears to be the deadliest aviation disaster in the US since 9/11 www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-...

the first fatal commercial plane crash in 16 years happened just days after Trump froze hiring of air traffic controllers that were already stretched thin

NEW: The U.S. just stopped giving out HIV medications to 20 million people around the world — even though clinics still have meds on the shelves. My latest for @npr.org: www.npr.org/sections/goa...

No point mincing words: this will kill a lot of people.

because they have trained themselves to think of politics as a social game in which they are participants, and not as something that determines whether people live or die

They’re very organized when they need to stop any progressive progress.

please, there’s gotta be more to organizing than posting, subscribing, donating, and making phone calls. i feel unmoored

A paper that understands its responsibility, in a country that knows it when it sees it. Impressive from Die Zeit. Refuses to show the salute, but calls it out for what it so obviously was. Headline: “A Hitler Salute is a Hitler Salute is a Hitler Salute”

Reading Parable of the Talents now by Octavia E Butler. Found this passage relevant to our times. Actually this entire book is relevant to our dystopian reality. #booksky #booktok

Most men have defined masculinity as not-feminine. This means that the more women expand their abilities and interests once the domain of men, these men then have to more narrowly define their masculinity. Soon all that’s left is just the toxic parts.

God, Lina Khan and the renewed FTC have, hands down, been the best and most successful aspect of this administration

the Laken Riley Act is a destructive, anti-immigrant bill, fueled by and fueling xenophobia, along with grotesque fictions about defending white womanhood. it's also legal chaos. my piece:

AOC remains one of a handful of elected democrats who understand how politics operates

The MAHA agenda isn’t about actual health, it’s about perceived moral purity. They don’t get sick because they’re better than you, and their wellness is a reflection of them living a Morally Correct life. Anything that contradicts that needs to go.

In parenting & abolition, "what works today may not work tomorrow. We dream, we plan, we ditch our plans, we do, we undo, we dream & do again." Two disturbed guys rent trucks and commit public acts of violence to deliver explicit ideological messages: one gets the scare story about who radicalized him, the other gets a sympathetic, nonpolitical account of his trauma

Billionaires have more money than they could ever need but never enough to fill the holes in their souls. They would send every last one of you into an early grave if it meant paying one cent less in taxes.

Federal charges for the murder of a CEO, but not the murder of a migrant teen. Maybe Foucault was on to something when he said the language of the law is not universal, but rather a discourse of one class to another.

I wonder how long people are going to point out conservative hypocrisy before they figure out that doesn't do anything.

In 2024, several New Hampshire Democrats, afraid that anti-trans attacks would work, voted in favor of a trans surgery ban and bathroom bill. They lost more seats than most other states. Now the R majority is ramping up targeting us. Capitulation didn't work. National Dems, take note.

A friend described the current Democratic response to the political moment “bringing a strongly worded letter to a knife fight” and I can tell that’s one of those phrases that’s going to be sticking

Good thing we gave the House Oversight committee lead to the guy with throat cancer instead of the generational talent
