While I was on my Fulbright in Kyrgyzstan last year, I discovered a ton of amazing disco/funk music from Central Asia. Here's a small mix I made with some gems from Central Asia, interspersed with a smattering Turkish, Levantine and Chinese songs soundcloud.com/yaxshiyan/ja...

This looks up my alley

Effective altruism is a philosophical project where you make up reasons why rich people paying you to write about AI has more utility than solving world hunger.

[gen z tony soprano] if u don’t tell me what i wanna hear you gonna be sleeping fishy style no cap

Oooh this is great

You may have heard of John Cage's "silent" piece "4'33", but did you know he made and performed a version that involved setting up an auditorium sound-system to being right on the edge of feedback and letting it sit there for the duration of the performance?

"If white men cannot own democracy, there will be no democracy. If white men cannot own the planet, there will be no planet". Wendy Brown, In the Ruins of Neoliberalism. These are times of a "dethroned" subject striking back, seeking to restore supremacy & choosing to burn it all down over equality.

This isn’t some rant saying “Germany has learned nothing from its past” - the reality is more subtle than that. Middle-class Germans live and travel with an incredible amount of ease and comfort, and they just got…sleepy. Many of them dismissed the far-right’s rage as just another set of complaints.

*explaining fearful avoidant attachment to my date* no babe it just means u get all the fun parts

Now reading The Memory Police #books #booksky

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

Re universities' AI policies and student work: allowing essays to be "structured" with Chat GPT help and also writing "edits" is abdicating the very value of university-level education itself. these two elements are the hardest parts honing critical thinking and the difficult work of writing

This is a bit fucking rich coming from The Guardian. The very paper that shoved transphobia down our throats for years in the interests of "balance" and "hearing from all sides" is now pretending that they were never part of that moral panic and they saw through it immediately. Yeah...right.

Microsoft's own research confirms something that was already pretty obvious: relying on a text generating machine to come up with answers erodes critical thinking, and is a method favoured by those who never liked doing critical thinking in the first place advait.org/files/lee_20...

Been thinking about this essay by @edwardongwesojr.com for weeks open.substack.com/pub/thetechb...

I think this bodes well

📌 Great post by @adamtooze.bsky.social i hadnt seen before. And as ecological stability goes, infrastructure as a tool that continues to enable the accumulation of wealth and power will grow (even) more important.

It's not a demolition site it's a mass grave. It's not a demolition site it's a crime scene. It's not a demolition site its a homeland. It's not a demolition site it's Palestine. It's not a demolition site it's a genocide.

Proud to have written a guest column @marisakabas.bsky.social's The Handbasket about what the last couple of weeks have felt like as a trans journalist to report on my own civil rights disappearing in real time. www.thehandbasket.co/p/guest-colu...

Effective Altruism *was* Effective Sociopathy. It was a gloss on selfishness that presumed the existence of benevolent, omniscient billionaires who could do cost/benefit analysis encompassing the entire future of humanity. Funny how the math always worked out to "keep the money for later use."

Now the whole country gets the experience of what it's like when private equity buys the place you work

sorry, I can no longer in good conscience do anything creative unless it can be irrefutably shown to be motivated by the right reasons, tonally appropriate given Current Events, but also timeless, without trying too hard, perfect in every respect, and wholly original

EMERGENCY PIECE: Elon Musk Wants to Get Operational Control of the Treasury’s Payment System. This Could Not Possibly Be More Dangerous. Worse, exclusive new information revealed here explicate how Musk’s actions relate to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent (Link at the end)

30 years of Democratic neoliberalism has all led to this moment: an inability to craft a coherent message against fascism because any such message would threaten the interests of their neoliberal donors.

Once again, not all techbros, but its always techbros who buy into fascism, technocultism, eugenics, and scientific racism; there is something rotting at the very heart of tech, and it is having/has been having global consequences. If only academic CS/STEM would have a moment of reflection.

The oligarchs have no idea why they're so rich. They've been feasting off the state capacity scraps left over from the New Deal, WWII, and the Cold War without knowing it. They genuinely believe it's their genius that makes US GDP grow. What four decades of neoliberalism do to a corporate elite.

paging Hannah Arendt

Yes, the coverage is insanely antiseptic. This is a crisis of existential proportions, but the headline on the Treasury story was "Senior U.S. official to exit after rift with Musk allies over payment system" Rift!

The whole MrBeast thing is so funny in that the behemoth of zoomer/alpha/whatever entertainment is 'gameshows but just the highlight reels'

ME: ... and so yeah i dunno if i ever really had anyone who would have considered me their "best friend". THE DOG THAT IS TELLING ME TO KILL: wow thats... yeah thats really sad thats fucked, im sorry ME: thanks dude
