i don’t understand how, psychologically, a person gets to a place where they interpret sign language as some kind of attack or imposition on their life. like, what the fuck is wrong with you?

They want us to memory hole tearing down the American flag to fly Trump’s.

“McConnell laid the blame for Jan. 6 squarely at the feet of Trump. In private, he said things like: ‘If this isn’t impeachable, I don’t know what is’ and indicated he expected bipartisan support for a vote to convict Trump … And yet…McConnell refused to vote to convict.”

Say what you want about Biden, he’s not out there claiming he actually won the election and sending a mob to the US Capitol to “fight like Hell” or they won’t have a country anymore. Republicans rightly condemned Trump on this day in 2021. He was unfit then. He is unfit now.

Jeff Bezos never wanted this cartoon to become public. He killed it, and as a result, pulitzer prize editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes quit. Make sure everyone sees this cartoon.

Adjudicated rapist says what?

Elon Musk has changed his X profile. His avatar is now Pepe the Frog, a mascot adopted by white supremacists. His name is a Latinisation of “Kek”, a phrase used by neo-Nazis. Musk has also backed AfD in Germany, the political home for racists. The man is telling us explicitly what he’s about.

in a world of Donald Trumps, be a Jimmy Carter

Musk's opinion piece for the German paper Die Welt, endorsing a right-wing extremist political party, matters a lot more for us than you might think, so I spent some time putting together a look at German politics, Musk's views, and the reaction to them. joycevance.substack.com/p/musk-in-di...

This is so cool

My latest. I wanted to take today off but I think more Americans need to know this before it's forgotten by tomorrow. "Elon Musk and JD Vance's Support of Germany's Nazi-Loving AfD Party Should Be Much Bigger News" thelefthook.substack.com/p/elon-musk-...

Canadian MP Charlie Angus: The message I’m hearing from people across Canada is this: they’re not afraid of you. They know you’re a convicted felon. They know that the people you’re bringing in to run your, let’s call it an “organization” rather than a government, are grifters, thieves, and thugs.

This is ridiculous. Republicans might as well cut out the middle man and make Putin Speaker.

Just a reminder that in 2019, RFK Jr.'s anti-vaccine misinformation campaign helped cause a measles outbreak in Samoa that killed 83 people, mostly kids. Do you really want him to lead the Department of Health and Human Services?

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

When Trump says "we want our FBI back" what he really means is, he wants to make sure they can never investigate or prosecute him again. This is not democracy.

A reminder that Christopher Wray, a lifelong Republican, was appointed FBI Director by Donald Trump but later became a target of Trump and MAGA after refusing to follow Trump’s illegal orders, lie on his behalf, and his role in the investigation of the Jan. 6 inssurection

“We are a country that stands on the precipice, just six weeks away from swearing in, for the second time, a wannabe “dictator” with ambitions to wildly reshape our democracy. There is a desire to tune out. I get it.” www.vanityfair.com/news/story/w...

A little louder for the folks in the back: The development of vaccines is likely the greatest achievement of mankind. www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/202...

My daughter and I are obsessed with Patrick O'Brian's "Master and Commander" books. There is much drinking of grog in these books, so we whipped up a batch. Not bad, though quite apt to make you start belting out sea shanties at the top of your lungs if you indulge in more than a single glass.

Cassidy Hutchinson is one of the many people on Trash Patel's hit list. Her "crime"? She testified before the j6 committee. She was pressured by Trump's camp to downplay what she knew. She did not. This is one of the many reasons Trash Patel cannot have any role in law enforcement.

Here is what Kushner admitted to when he pled guilty.

Elon Musk thinks HE won the election and gets to be the autocrat. Fascist and delusional to the core.

www.bookweb.org/news/year-da... Truly astonished and gratified to find The Boys in the Boat still on this list thirteen years after publication.

Wow. When CNN reached out to multiple experts in doxxing, cyber bullying, and online abuse they refused to speak on the record for fear of themselves becoming a target of Elon Musk. Wow. This is where we’re @ ?! /1 www.cnn.com/2024/11/27/b...

Public library energy is the best energy. Like here is all the knowledge we could find, it's been meticulously organized and vetted and it will cost you nothing today, welcome to the absolute pinnacle of human civic evolution, feel free to pull up any bean bag chair you like

Mueller didn’t say he was innocent. Cannon didn’t say he was innocent. Merchan didn’t say he was innocent. Chutkan didn’t say he was innocent. Jack Smith didn’t say he was innocent. He got away with all of it. And not a one of them said he was innocent of any of it. Not one.

These words are engraved above the entrance to the United States Supreme Court. It's time for them to be removed. They're clearly no longer accurate.

After today, Americans may well go on saying that no one is above the law. But no one will believe it. Nor should they. Trump has destroyed that America forever more. #trump #jacksmith

In these trying times , I keep thinking about people I've written about. Today I'm thinking of Sarah Graves, who, starving, hiked her way over the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the winter of 1846 to tell the world of the tragedy unfolding at Donner Lake. If she could do that, maybe I can survive Trump.

I created a starter pack with links to authors of narrative nonfiction books. True tales from history, adventure, sports, and contemporary life. If you write such, let me know. go.bsky.app/R6VvfGB

1/After Trump claimed he didn't know anything about Project 2025, I wrote several columns for my newsletter, Civil Discourse, documenting that wasn't true. Now that he's appointed Russ Vought to his cabinet, here's a little refresher b/c Project 2025 is coming joycevance.substack.com/p/more-lies-...

It's weird that Looking for Alaska is the second-most banned book in the U.S., and mostly challenged by evangelical Christians, because the novel is about Radical Hope and how forgiveness is available to all people at all times, which are Christian concepts I wrote about because I'm a Christian.

Two questions: a) What was the happiest single day in American history? b) The saddest?
