Friend of mine who worked at US Digital Service was fired by DOGE, along with the entire team they worked with.. they were building tech to streamline the federal response to the next pandemic. So this checks out.

Re-upping this from yesterday. The ICE agreements with local PDs and sheriff's offices are *dramatically* expanding every day. This will be the biggest story in the country in a few months, once all these officers are fully trained by ICE to start asking for papers on routine traffic stops.

Every major UK newspaper - left, right, broadsheet, tabloid - is running a front page campaign against copyright carveouts for AI training. I can't remember the last time any political cause had such broad support, let alone one so anti-big tech and so economically consequential.

Not kidding when I say that if people are doing this in public and they do not present badges or identification when asked (these goons did not), those people are fair game to be shot and killed under current law. There is no difference between this and kidnapping. It is the same exact thing.

You mean one lawmaker has been paying attention to what is actually happening in broad daylight, out in the open, on websites and in think tanks and campaign speeches?

NEW from me: ICE is quickly and very quietly expanding the powers of local and state governments when it comes to street-level "show me your papers" immigration enforcement. I've found places in Florida, Nevada, Idaho, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and more pending. www.wlrn.org/government-p...

Notable, but an older trick in the book than the story says. Back in the early 1980s Rudy Giuliani (lol) oversaw the military rapidly constructing immigration detention centers at military sites across the US and Puerto Rico. Giuliani was Reagan's DOJ guy then, which oversaw INS (before DHS).

Oklahoma is the most pro-Trump state by basically any measure, and now it will pretty much lose its biggest employer

Exclusive: Terrorist group the Base appears defiant as new administration aims to deprioritize threat from far right, via @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

This is a head-spinning barrage of threats to democracy in less than a month. Shock and awe indeed. brightlinewatch.org/accelerated-...

I get this take on some level, but the thing is - the law is just words on paper. If a dictator does something profoundly illegal to consolidate power, the legality question is not the actual story - the story is the thing that is being done. Legal questions aside.

I for one am nervous about what it means when the US declares that criminal gangs are actually terrorists, in the context in which the War on Terror was never ended by Congress and declaring these groups terrorists means you can treat basically anyone from these countries as terrorists.

battery in broad daylight and a lot of bystander effect going on in this crowd. a handful of good samaritans could’ve shut these assholes down.

Not really institutions, but the actual structure of government. Parliamentary systems are much much better in making room for dynamic coalitions, creating room for third (and fourth or fifth) parties, etc.. They also have more accountability between w/ no confidence votes. That's just a basic fact.

Stephen Fry, "I'm deeply worried about the darkening shadow that's going over the world, the shadow of fascism" Laura Kuenssberg, "You would use that word?" Stephen Fry, "Absolutely. It's a cult of power. And power only speaks to power"

This is the kind of having back where Jews get their own state and they have to stay in their own state, and Christians get their own states and the Jews have to leave them. Not hard to understand, there's actually a consistent logic here. It's ethnonationalism. Many in Israel actually agree.

From a FOIA perspective, "the entire federal workforce should write down and email what they did last week" is extremely funny

You do know, if the opposition characterizes things in a particular way, news editors often quote that characterization in a headline

If there's any agency where diversity is actually an unquestionably core principle, you would think that would be the global spy network

Following a loud public outcry about job cuts at the National Parks Service — and a relentless media campaign from outdoors enthusiasts across the country — it looks like the Trump administration has blinked. via @jackdolan.bsky.social

Per our engineer apparently there's a fire at the building that provides NPR headquarters with Internet, and so local stations across the US are gonna have issues with feeds and distribution of content. We're already scrambling of how to distribute our statewide Florida show that starts right now.

One of the leaders of the same far-right racist French political party as Marine Le Pen just cancelled his scheduled speech at CPAC because of Bannon’s Nazi salute, which the US press is still too cowardly to describe as a Nazi salute.

There is in fact no basis in law for requiring this. It actually opens sheriffs up to liability issues when they hold people past release date without the right documents from the feds. They are typically"requests" to hold, not legal requirements. Many do it! But it's not the law.

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

But.. I asked the Florida Attorney General office for a basic piece of information today - a very regular thing - and they just responded with a link to a post on X. Not as easy as you make it out to be when X is ingrained in the government infrastructure at this point.

You don't have to worry about selling stuff when you're pumpin n dumpin crypto, taking all our data, gaining control of payment systems and STILL getting federal contracts

As I have been stressing in my pinned post (lol), familiarize yourself with WWI America. Woodrow Wilson used wartime control of USPS to censor media that was unfriendly to him. He filled the gap with official propaganda outlets. Control of USPS means something different in 2025, but..

The reality check is that it doesn't seem that the Trump administration cares about traditional electoral consequences or traditional pushback of any kind. They are trudging a path we've never seen. All the political capital they have, they're burning it right now. These numbers don't matter.

The mayor who brought this suit forward is a Democrat, for the record. Thin skinned power tripper. The ruling is abhorrent and they should write an op-ed raking the judge who issued it across the coals just to test the limits of how deep into democratic decline we are.

Breaking the places that literally made America great in the first place. Without this kind of institution we don't bring the internet to the masses, we don't give the world GPS, we don't get global advancement of medicines. This will take generations to repair, if ever.

A Hinds County judge ordered a newspaper to remove an editorial that criticized Clarksdale city officials and said that “secrecy (and) deception erode the public trust.”

In 2024, the NLRB filed a complaint against Tesla for interfering in a union drive at their Buffalo, NY assembly plant. Today:

🚨🚨🚨 Yesterday, the NLRB’s Buffalo office (Region 3) received word from its landlord that GSA—acting on behalf of DOGE—had unilaterally cancelled the Region’s five-year lease, without any prior notice to the Agency. The Region has been given 90 days to vacate the building.

An important lesson actually. As I like to remind people the largest expansion of the welfare state in my entire lifetime happened under Trump. He did it because it was popular and he was convinced it would make people like him.
