🚨 Big News for European Political Science 🚨 We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the European Political Science Society (EPSS): a new, member-led, not-for-profit association built to support our scholarly community. 🔗 epssnet.org Here’s a thread with everything you need to know. 🧵

Arrived in Madrid for #epsa2025. Though not presenting, I've two papers -- one on imperial nostalgia, and one on class and accent -- that co-authors are valiantly fronting in two great panels. See you about 👋

📢📢📢 another 3 days left to apply! 📢📢📢

And yesterday we wrapped it up! A group photo (without @andreavik.bsky.social 😭). Thanks to all the attendees for a valuable and rewarding few days. Hopefully see you next year?

Second (and final) day of our first PAIR methods summer school on democratic health and discontent. Pictured: @robjohns75.bsky.social on `Understanding the Threat to Democracy: Survey & Experimental Designs' (the quant stream!) and Rod Rhodes on `Fieldwork with elites' (the qual stream!).

📊 The new Journal Citation Report by Clarivate is out and we’re excited to share that JEPP has achieved an impact factor of 4.5 – one of our best values to date! 🙏 A big thank you to the whole JEPP family: our authors, reviewers, and readers for your continued trust, engagement, and support!

Aaah, a nice sunny Sunday. I'll just check my notifica-

It's -- for want of a more professional phrase -- hot as fuck on costa del Southampton.

As early-career colleagues start thinking about autumn job applications, I wrote a piece describing my post-PhD path. Reflecting on "project," "person," and "place" with mentors helped me immensely, so I hope this note pays it forward somehow. www.wlallen.com/wp-content/u...

What a job

@sotonpolitics.bsky.social @ #EPSA2025 If anyone wants to meet in Madrid, preferably in extreme shade and/or a fridge, get in touch.

Several colleagues are going to be in Madrid next week for the European Political Science Association, presenting research on party decision-making, attitudes towards minorities, populism, gender, social media, acccents and class, urban-rural divides, the politics of dating, and more! #EPSA2025

Starting to come to a conclusion on my question of 'should I buy a second pair of shorts?'

🚨Global public action (climate!) is most effective when countries do it together yet we're in a period of IO backlash rooted in left-behind places Does it mean all left-behind regions hate IOs the same? @patrickbayer.bsky.social & I have a paper accepted @bjpols.bsky.social abt this🧵 osf.io/rtymv

We are delighted our Professor Gerry Stoker has been recognised for his research and impact with an OBE 👇

Congratulations to my friend, coauthor and colleague @profstoker.bsky.social‬ who has been awarded an OBE in the King's Birthday Honours for services to local governance and to the study of democracy!

Going to #EPSA2025? Desperate for more things to read and comment on and don't mind working on a Saturday? I'm chairing a genuinely great panel ('EUPOL - Understanding public opinion in the EU') that is currently sans discussant. Let me know if you want to take 3 of these papers...

🚨Today is the LAST day to register for our conference 📝with @psawomenpol.bsky.social next week! 📅It's £20 to attend the 2-day conference, which includes a lunch🥪, coffee, and an evening reception 🎤celebrating Professors Fiona Mackay and Yvonne Galligan! Registration link here: tinyurl.com/3xnjn5at

This is telling about Starmer: he meant to say something positive ('walk forward together as neighbours') but could only seem to think to phrase it negatively (against being an 'island of strangers').

Not even one of the most successful managers in the world, in post for just 6 months and with a 75% win rate, can avoid the English desire to relentlessly criticise national managers.

There are three days left to register for our upcoming conference! We cannot wait to welcome a whole range of gender scholars to @unisouthampton.bsky.social & hear about the latest research examining inequalities! Register by 13 June 👉 tinyurl.com/3xnjn5at Submit questions 👉 tinyurl.com/2x3z8u99

Politics giveth, politics taketh

A problem in social science is too many theories underdetermined by (too few) novel rigorous tests. I like the @ajpseditor.bsky.social statement, but the «novel» theory+empirics req. exacerbates this serious threat to knowledge cumulation.

Although there's some wiggle room in their wording, the implication is that rigorous and ground breaking tests of existing theories are unlikely to be sent for review 🤷‍♀️

Main takeaway from the other side of ~100 first year undergraduate essays: we must ban all mention of the phrase 'identity politics'. Cast it into Mount Doom. Put it in a lead box and drop it into the South Pacific.

I’d love to help but I’m unfortunately swamped, calendar is booked up completely tomorrow

Plenty of European countries - including the UK - are doing this, though in more of a foot-on-the-oxygen-line than a bullet-to-the-head way.

Marking a not bad essay and realizing it's probably mostly genAI. Again and again and again.

The first paper I edited @poqjournal.bsky.social is finally out in print!
