you can’t be more authentically “antisystem” to people who don’t think being federally in charge makes you “the system”. at that level of abstraction, it’s like trying to chase down a deer.

And1 more thing

funny sequence of events at Passover tonight where we tried to stress to the toddler that she can’t put her fingers in her drink that was immediately followed by everyone doing the “pinky fingers in wine” thing for the Ten Plagues

I’m 100% on board with Eggers just being the go-to guy for big, slightly churched up entries in the monster canon. let him do the Loch Ness Monster. give him a go at Sasquatch.

people are making fun of this as being pretentious or pedantic but they are totally different languages! middle english is somewhat intelligible to a modern english speaking audience and old english is about intelligible to a modern english speaking audience as german or dutch!

this is saying it particularly out loud, but a lot of people’s basic political positioning does, in fact, boil down to “the best way to do activism is to be a hater on a personal level, which, conveniently, I would be doing anyway even if I didn’t have a cover that made it seem more important”

there’s a “low-info/high engagement” phenomenon you only find on here, where it’s like you spend 18 hours a day becoming acutely tuned into minutiae about politics but either unable or unwilling to understand the context or scope of it

the thing about Liz Bruenig is that there’s maybe — *maybe* — a reasonable spot in the coalition for “I’m personally but not politically anti-abortion that I want to achieve through social welfare” if you are not *also* extremely antipathetic to the liberals and feminists working to guard that right

there are, tbh, occasional times when I think the complaint about passive voice in headlines is being fussy for a newspaper not 100% explicitly stating something is bad and/or who’s at fault when most of their readership are probably gonna pick up on it

honestly, I’m not even unsympathetic to this argument, it’s just weird to see this kind of assistance only acknowledged as a thing that happened when it’s convenient to dunk on someone

wait how am I just learning there’s a new Ari Aster joint coming out like, next month

a weirdly common belief here, both pro and anti, is “union is when man makes car”

you're gonna wanna see this

there are apparently two or so illicitly-taken photos of Pynchon throughout the years but he’s still mostly anon because: 1. they can’t be used formally 2. his fans hate the disrespect 3. he’s not a big enough name for them to really be a “scoop”

it remains very funny that Neil Gorsuch is basically the living embodiment Dale Gribble's anti-government alliance with John Redcorn

you might be hard-pressed to guess who the writer refers to as having “rudimentary chord progressions” (answer in alt text)

there are discourses in nearby futures that you couldn’t possibly be ready for, as cataclysmic as asteroids

completely at a loss here — there is a full field of candidates of moderate to leftist positioning, there is no serious emerging Republican challenger, what on earth is driving this sudden kneebending

man waht

when that one mutual who 99% just likes your posts finally replies

new Sahm Rule / Waffle House Index just dropped

docker? container? why don't you try letting 'er be free to make 'er own decisions
