Hi Brian, I think you might be right. In another photo the stipe is properly shaggy. And most caps were not upturned like this one. In the Skoke in October.

There are thousands of species around here. About 20 are tasty and safe. Maybe half a dozen will try to kill you. The rest are best enjoyed for their habitat role, their appearance, or just the discovery.

I see reports that, like most other conks, it's like chewing on cork. There are toxic conks, but this is not known to be among them.

It's an old trick. I happened to notice once in the mid-1980s that many of the flights out of San Jose, CA had had their official flight times lengthened by a few minutes, without explanation.
