Probably preaching to the choir here but, some data from the 1960s.

Current top of news in America: Two under-taxed men, one the richest in the world and the other the most powerful, beneficiaries of their dads' ill-gotten fortunes and addled by drugs and/or age, are currently using their personally-owned social media platforms to engage in a reality TV smackdown.

DOGE is now reviewing every NIH grant that goes out, I reported last week. That review is AI-driven and is screening for DEI, trans health, China, vaccine hesitancy, and the institutions to whom Trump has blocked funding, @hannahnatanson.bsky.social reports. Gift link: wapo.st/3HhnPSt

Cutting $20 billion to NIH over 25 years may save $500 billion on paper, but it’d end up costing $8.2 trillion in lost human health. But NIH isn't the only thing being cut. The budget also slashes all NSF-funded science by 73 percent. NASA faces “the biggest single-year cut to NASA in history."

Last day at the GISS building (Wed. May 28th). 🥲

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Goodbye REUs, goodbye GRFPs, goodbye CAREERs (which ironically I just finished writing today). This is the end of the road for all early-career scientists. If you aren't enraged you aren't paying attention.

I can't find anybody versed in space policy who thinks Trump ejecting Isaacman is a good idea, but I can find many saying it's an awful idea. See, for example, @sciguyspace.bsky.social's comment on X: "A likely disaster for NASA."

I don't think anyone outside of universities, pharma and biotech, independent research institutions have any idea of what is happening right now. If you haven't sounded the alarm among your friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to do it.

"If the proposal is enacted, Americans today and tomorrow will be sicker, poorer, and die younger” an $18 Billion cut Only 3 NIH Institutes will remain in place, and even they will have their funds markedly reduced www.statnews.com/2025/05/30/n...

Under the administration's proposed budget, Sea Grant - which is within NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research - would be completely zeroed out. Not surprising given that the administration did the same in 2017, but still a gut punch.

The National Science Foundation budget proposal would be a devastating blow to American science. 240,000 fewer people would be involved in federally-funded science in fiscal year 2026, according to estimates in the document. nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF...

The Presidents Budget Request for NASA is out. It’s a bloodbath Canceled are DAVINCI, VERITAS, Juno, OSIRIS-APEX, US participation in ExoMars and EnVision… Huge cut to R&A. No funding to begin development of the Uranus Orbiter. If you’ve ever cared about NASA, time to contact congress.

I urge everyone to read Unbreaking’s new page on everything the govt is doing to destroy & diminish medical research funding. It’s the best thing I’ve read on this topic: @lizneeley.bsky.social & co have such done an incredible job. unbreaking.org/issues/medic...

They said they were only going for illegal immigrants. They are now attacking legal immigrants with green cards. They're trying to make citizenship a privilege rather than birthright. It's not a slippery slope to see where they're going next. They will be arresting citizens for their views.

The dumbest part of making all these scientists from NASA/GISS move is that it won’t save the federal government any money because they will continue to pay the lease. Also, can we agree that Tom’s is a terrible restaurant and wouldn’t still be in business without Seinfeld?

Jesus. Excellent work by Michael Le Page, and utterly infuriating scenario. As Michael points out, the press release from Colossal called these dire wolves throughout. But now they want to argue that they never claimed that. Scandalous, really. www.newscientist.com/article/2481...
