This has never been much of handicap for them, has it?

“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition… There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”

That’s immaterial as it’s unlikely to happen, but my earlier response did mention making it into multiple US states. And that’s even more reason for it not to happen. It would upset the two party ecosystem too much. (Similar to why all of Mexico wasn’t annexed in the 1848.)

There’s no hard and fast rule to how big a ‘state’ should be, or what’s too big. This is whether the focus is on US states or nation states. Think Alaska & Rhode Is.
& self sustaining isn’t much of a relevant criterion because it’s not like Canada is (or could be without radical change) an autarky.

… and in a direction likely very unfavorable to the GOP. (Which is the main reason no new states have been added since Alaska and Hawaii … and why the last time was two states… maintaining balance in the Senate.)

To be honest, the sheer size doesn’t matter. Nations have taken invaded and occupied lands larger than their initial size. Regardless, it’s very unlikely to happen in this case.
But were it taken and turned into US states, it would likely completely upset the balance of parties in the US…

Not to mention if it were to be annexed (very unlikely but just entertaining the possibility) and made into one or more states this would almost certainly mean the GOP would lose its stranglehold on the Senate.

It’s only bizarre if one expects ideological coherence and one believes cryptocurrency can easily deliver on that promise. I’ve always been skeptical of the latter. The ruling class isn’t likely to fade away because of crypto.

Have you seen Charulata, Getrud, Zulu, Nothing But a Man, Red Desert, The Pumpkin Eater, and King and Country? Those would probably all be in my top ten for that year.

Regarding Harry and Tonto, I’d seen The Late Show (1977) and loved it so much I went in with high expectations for Harry and… my expectations were dashed.

Bit of coincidence: I first watched (and enjoyed) Phantom of the Paradise a few weeks ago. What’s weird is it feels very different than other De Palma films.
