Wanted to make grim jokes about carbon budgets, decided not to. But, genuinely, what will the conversation be 3 years from now? Will scientists move on to discuss a carbon debt, or to a new 2C budget? What will headlines look like, and how will people react? Will they get tired of "dire warnings"?

Ultimately, climate models are worth defending for many reasons-they really are a surprising, communal achievement of so many different expertises working together (going to the CESM workshops is always so beautiful!). But the main reason might just be that they make everyone really big mad.

All due respect to the panelists, but hard disagree. EU policymakers know quite well how to wield the purse strings as a cudgel as well as, if not better than, the current US admin. Even now, most EU institutions pale in terms of research freedom compared to the US. This schadenfreude makes me sick.
