THREAD: The Trump administration's DOJ has removed a study from the NIJ website that found that immigrants, and particularly undocumented immigrants, commit crimes at significantly lower rates than U.S. citizens. The study is at odds with the Trump regime's propaganda about immigrants & crime. (1)

It's true that open borders are a great solution to falling birthrates in many places, and all pronatalists should also be pro-immigration. It's also true that birth rates are falling globally, so this is a short-term solution. It just displaces the problem for now.

I have a new Substack out today. It's about why so many on the right are nostalgic for a manufacturing economy: they think it will make men manlier. darbysaxbe.substack.com/p/are-tariff...

New Substack! It's about whether higher education is suppressing the birth rate, as a recent Heritage Foundation report claims. When you dig into the data, it's clear that their arguments don't stand up. Defunding education won't fix the baby bust. darbysaxbe.substack.com/p/is-too-muc...

Nostalgia for a manufacturing economy ignores why factory workers did well: They were in UNIONS that won them good wages & benefits. If you think the current admin is pro-labor, look at Trump's union-busting pick for NLRB or the labor track records of his buddies Bezos & Musk.

Here's a bizarro-world take, but I think it's true. I (masochistically) watched Jesse Watters on Fox News defending Trump tariffs, & realized that his arguments were Ralph Nader's from 2000! At the time, Nader was arguing for more protectionism on trade, while Repubs were backing GW Bush (cont.)

An important point getting overlooked: When NIH cancels "diversity" grants (e.g., diversity supplements, Fs, Ks, etc), they aren't canceling the grants based on *what* the grant studies. They're cancelling them based on *who* is doing the research. And that disallowed "who" is anyone not white.

We can claim to live in the greatest country on earth because we respect freedom of speech & individual liberties, OR we can kidnap people w/out due process because we don't like their tattoos or their op-eds & ship them to mega-prisons in other countries. That's it. We don't get to have both.

Things that are not cool to do: kidnap someone, throw them into an unmarked van, and put them in prison in a different state because they wrote an op-ed that you didn't like.

I have a new Substack out today, on the new science of breastmilk timing and composition, and why it tells us that breast pumps are a poor, and particularly American, substitute for the real maternity leaves that women get in other countries. darbysaxbe.substack.com/p/the-proble...

Unreal: The Trump admin has requested info on Chinese students studying at six universities, claiming that the "student visa system has become a Trojan horse for Beijing." Is this to divert our focus from the actual Trojan horses closer to home: @ Mar a Lago, Trump Hotel, Trump memecoin?

I have a new Substack up today. It's about the Los Angeles fires, and what it will look like to rebuild our city in a sustainable way. It's about why progressives need to think bigger & bolder. Plus, lots of gossip about my neighbors. darbysaxbe.substack.com/p/an-abundan...

In retrospect, probably a bad plan for me to time my late 40s rage-intensive entry into menopause during the first 100 days of the Trump presidency

In 2021, McConnell successfully filibustered a Democratic CR ahead of a government shutdown and forced them to accept a clean one instead. What happened this week - a total cave on a totally partisan long-term funding bill - hasn’t happened in the 20 years I’ve covered Congress.

Harm mitigation is a weak-sauce approach for the Democrats. Trump & Musk are already raiding agencies, capriciously firing people, undermining Congress, & wreaking havoc. You don't attract fans by making the damage hurt a little less. Grow a spine and stand for something.

I have a new Substack out today. It talks about the infamous National Science Foundation's "banned words" list and how the administration's cancellation of "woke" science and DEI initiatives is a thin smokescreen to undermine science & research more broadly. substack.com/home/post/p-...

This, from the Heritage Foundation, is absolutely bonkers. Defund & deregulate education to boost the birth rate? In fact, as recent research has shown, family formation has dropped most among low-income women with least educational attainment.

UMASS IS RESCINDING ALL GRAD POSITIONS FOR THIS YEAR

My annual psych internship rant, now with even more 🔥. The pre-PhD internship is an outdated model that devalues the expertise psych students bring. Now, we may be requiring students to move to unsafe cities and unstable positions, during a stage when healthcare and reproductive rights are critical.

Defunding research on brain development and memory doesn't help anyone and certainly doesn't improve the welfare of students.

I started a Substack! My first post is about pronatalism: a progressive vision for promoting births. Future posts will talk about the neuroscience of parenting, how Los Angeles can rebuild after fires, whether science is woke, & why I hate breast pumps. open.substack.com/pub/darbysax...

So let me get this straight-- we are welcoming convicted rapist and sex trafficker Andrew Tate to the U.S., while jailing and revoking the green card of a graduate student who engaged in campus political protest? Apparently rape is OK, but free speech is not.
