It wasn't 80. The last eight columns were used for sequence numbers. So you only had 72 columns to write your stuff on. it's the reason glass teletypes worked on 80 columns.

Back in 1981 at age 18, I was punching those on an IBM duplicating card punch every day. (Junior task for the junior worker.)
