Massive shout out to the folks who chatted to me about their experiences attending & organising the case study events: Freeplay, PAX Online & MIGW. I will forever be obsessed with what they all achieved in those ~unprecedented times~

Also on Wednesday, I’ll be on a panel with @benegliston.bsky.social @tianyizhangshao.bsky.social & @marcuscarter.com on digital game monetisation. I’ll be chatting about our research on kids’ perceptions of harmful game monetisation (but why spending money in games can be good, too!)

This whole Bill is a shambles but one of the most perplexing things to me is that the govt can’t even provide clear messaging on what they’re trying to protect kids from (FOMO? lol) - resulting in scattershot policy with every new piece of info raising more questions than it answers

AND ALSO without talking to a single child??? Young people are incredibly capable and sophisticated media users. Like let’s stop pretending they’re not and actually ask them what they need to feel safer and comfier in digital spaces!

Every social and digital media expert I’ve seen speak on this has been unanimous: this bill is unnecessary, and it will exacerbate harms children face online. And it certainly won’t stop kids from accessing social media (though it will kill current efforts to make social media safer for them!!)
